Please, I’d rather do it my own way
By Rev. Robert Turner
Minister Os
Good Samaritan Baptist Church
Genesis 2:7-9;
15-17; 3:l-7a
“Please, Mother,” the young
wife in the television
commercial of the 60s pleads,
“I would rather do it myself.”
It is the most human of desires
- to run our own lives.
In the language of the 70s it
might be called “pulling your
own strings.” Nobody wants to
be a puppet. We want to be
free to do our own thing. We
want to be self-sufficient,
independent, our own boss. We
want to be liberated,
self-actualized, king of our own
castle. “Please, I‘d rather do it
my way.”
That is how the first man
and the first woman felt, too.
There they were in that
beautiful garden. They had
everything good at their
disposal. They had plenty to
eat, good health, fresh clean air
to breathe. Best of all, they
had each other for
companionship. They lived in a
paradise. They lived almost as
well as we! What’s that? How
could I call our world a
paradise? Don’t you have
enough to eat? Don’t you have
a nice warm house when the
weather is cold? Don’t you
have family and friends to car
about you? Why is it you stay
so tense, so depressed, so
angry? But you say that Adam
and Eve didn’t have to work.
Ah, but they did. It was
already God’s plan that they
should tend the garden. Can
you honestly imagine life
without some kind of
meaningful activity? Could it
be that you don’t realize how
fortunate you really are?
A distinguished Britisher
said recently that he visited an
American home that seemed to
have everything: two cars in
the garage, a beautiful living
room with expensive furniture,
a color TV set, a kitchen filled
with the latest gadgets, and a
large pool and beautiful patio.
However, the lady of the house
was reading a book entitled
How to Be Happy.
They lived in a paradise. But
like many of us, it wasn’t
enough. God had placed
limitations on their freedom.

There was a tree in the midst
of the garden. We are all aware
that the Scriptures do not say
it was an apple tree. Some wag
has said that it wasn’t the apple
on the tree but the pair on the
ground that started all of our
troubles. There was a tree in
the center of the garden - the
tree of the knowledge of good
and evil. God told Adam and
Eve that they could eat the
fruit of any tree in the garden
except that one. And here is
that one hard truth of the
Scriptures. You can kick
against it and scream and gnash
your teeth, but it will not
change this fact: Man (men and
women) was never intended by
God to be absolutely free.
Absolute freedom in this world
is a myth! Everywhere we turn
there are limitations on our
freedom. The sooner we learn
to accept the truth the happier
we will be in this world.
Even if there were no police,
even if there were no laws, I
could not exercise absolute
freedom on the highways.
Imagine the chaos that would
result, if all of us tried our
absolute freedom on the
highways at one time. Think of
the chaos. Think of the
carnage. There are certain
physical laws that put
automatic limitations on my
freedom behind the wheel of a
car.
There are certain ethical
laws that govern the way we do
business. Suppose no one
anywhere felt any compulsion
to be honest? Suppose you
could not buy a carton of milk
without the fear that someone
had placed some dangerous
chemicals in it. Suppose the
builders of bridges decided to
substitute rubber for steel in
the building of bridges. What if
you could not trust anybody
any of the time? That’s absurd,
you say. Os course it is. We
assume that there are
limitations on our freedom.
We modern folks had better
be warned that there are
limitations on our sexual
freedom as well. The Biblical
injunction against adultery is as
harsh as it is against murder.
You are not free to seduce
your neighbor’s wife or
husband. Too many homes are
being broken up, too many
people are being crushed
emotionally. Too many are
damaging their reputations,
risking alienation from their
families, tampering with the
most delicate and dangerous of
all human emotions. There is
no absolute freedom in this
world.
What is true in the physical
world and the world of ethics
and morals is also true in the
spiritual world. The whole
testimony of the Scriptures is
that we were not created to be
independent but to be

interdependent. Indeed, the
Bible may best be understood
as God’s declaration of
interdependence. God creates a
garden and places man in that
garden. Man takes his food
from that garden but he also
tends it. He dared not abuse it,
pollute it, destroy it wihout
paying the consequences.
