SCLC president applauds action
weeks of protest in north
Alabama.
Lowery said the reversal by
the Alabama Court of Criminal
Appeals is, “a ray of hope for
the poor and blacks in
Alabama’s criminal justice
system.” Lowery said that the
reversal shows the importance
of exposing oppression as
SCLC has done.
SCLC first marched in
support of Hines on May 26,
1978, in Decatur, Ala. That
march erupted into bloodshed
when the Ku Klux Klan tried
to block the parade route of
the marchers. Lowery and his
wife, Evelyn, narrowly escaped
death when the nonviolent
protest turned into a violent
melee. Four black youths were
shot in the head (none died)
and two Klansmen were shot
when the KKK opened fire on
the marchers. A year laster on

Feds may
investigate
government
WASHINGTON - The
Justice Department, accused
by a group of black, Hispanic,
Asian-American and American
Indian attorneys of
discrimination, may have to
investigate itself.
It was revealed recently that
eight leaders of a group known
as tire Racial and Ethnic
Minority Attorneys Caucus
have filed a formal
administrative complaint after
two years of informal talks
failed to bring a settlement
with department officials. The
complaint could affect 150
lawyers.
The complaint charges the
department’s six major legal
divisions discriminate against
minority attorneys in hiring,
training and promotion.
It said the department has
failed to recruit more
minorities -about 8 percent of
lawyers in the six divisions are
minorities -- or to
proportionately promote those
in the department.
The complaint also alleges
minority lawyers have been
denied equal access to formal
and informal training and that
non-minority attorneys get the
best cases. It charges a double
standard is used to evaluate job
performances by minorities,
with non-minority lawyers
granted awards disproportion
ately.
