PART II
God creates woman to be a
companion to man. In the
words of Paul Stookey’s
wedding song, “She draws her
life from man, then gives it
back again.” Man and women
are not created to be
independent. They are
partners. They need not
another. They are
interdependent.
Then there are children -- at
first dependence, sometimes
independence, but with
emotional as well as physical
maturity, a healthy
interdependence between
parent and child develops. Os
course, in many families, there
comes a time when the roles
become reversed. The crudest
price to be paid for some
persons in the aging process is
the loss of independence. If we
have developed patterns of
interdependence, however,
with our families and friends
while we are young and strong
- being there when they
needed us - we need not dread
as much the time when we may
need to lean more heavily
upon them.
First man and his garden.
Then man and woman.
Suddenly the world is
populated with other persons -
persons who must be dealt
with, communicated with,
understood and loved. But man
rebels. Beginning with Cain and
Abel, history is often the vile
record of many trying to live his
life as if only he and his own
were the only persons on this
world that really mattered.
When will we learn that on the
spaceship earth that we and the
Soviet Union and Iran and
South Africa and Brazil cannot
go our own way. The only
hope for the future of our
world is that we learn the
lesson of the Bible that we
were created for
interdependence. Remember
that lofty vision popularized in
a song sometime back: “I saw
the people gather, I heard the
music start. The song that they
were singing is ringing in my
heart. ‘No man is an island, no
man stands alone. Each man’s
joy is joy to me. Each man’s
grief is my own. We need one
another, so I will defend each
man as my brother Each man
as my friend.’”
Yes, we were created for
interdependence with the
garden in which God has
placed us, with one another as
we share this garden and, of
course, with God Himself.
Adam and Eve did not
understand that until it was
too late. An analogy can be
drawn from the human home.
How many young people can’t
wait to get away from home?
No more bossy mother. No
more domineering dad. “Please
I would rather do it myself?”
But after a time of

“Mr. Gospel Chorus” by
Presiding Elder ILL. Postell.
independence - after a time
out in a world that could care
less - after a time of kicking
against the old values and
traditions - home starts
looking a lot more attractive.
The same home that once upon
a time saw so much strife and
conflict becomes a haven of
joy. So it is our relationship
with God.
He did not create us to be
independent but to be
interdependent. Trusting
ourselves is not enough. In

William E. Henley’s poem,
Invictus, he talks about his
unconquerable soul, how under
adverse circumstances he has
not winced or cried aloud, and
how he triumphantly
proclaims, “1 am the master of
my fate. I am the captain of
my soul.” In the end, Henley
committed suicide. Selftrust
was not enough. We need God.
And did you know that He
needs us? Stand a little taller
when you leave this place. You
are a needed person.
Edward T. Sullivan has
written in How God Works:
“When God wants an
important thing done in this
world, or a wrong righted, He
goes about it in a very singular
way. He does not release His
thunderbolts or stir up His
earthquake. He simply has a
tiny, helpless baby bom,
perhaps in an obsure home,
perhaps of a very humble
mother. Then He puts the idea
or purpose into the mother’s
heart, she puts it onto the
baby’s mind and then - God
waits.”
There are some things in this
world God can do only
through you. He needs you to
show His love to others. He
needs you to spread His joyous
good news to those who are
still trying to their own way
and do not know why they are
so unhappy.
And did you know as you
let Him use you and flow
through you that you will
discover a freedom that the
world cannot know. Those
early disciples Jesus knew more
joy and more freedom than
Adam and Eve ever knew
before the fall there in
Paradise. It is the joy and
freedom that a new bride and
groom know. It is the joy and
exhiliration that new parents
know. It is the glorious burden
of interdependence. We need
one another. We need this
beautiful garden in which He
has places us. More than
anything else, we need His love
and His peace within.
A fable is told about a small
fish that lived in the waters of
the ocean close to the surface.
One day he looked down into
the cold, dark depths beneath
him and became tearful. “What
if I were to fall,” he thought to
himself. And the thought
became an obsession. “I must
catch my tail,” he thought,
“and hold it up so I wilo not
fall.” Around and around he
chased his tail until he heard
the ocean say to him, “Relax
little fish. I am around you and
in you. 1 will not let you fall.”
How like the little fish we are.
How we need to heard the
words of the Master, “Do not
be anxious about your 1ife....”
We can depend on Him. Can
He depend on us?
