“It’s a challenge, not a

C. Lane of Wrens, Ga., in

of the “Paineite.” He has

explaining his current
assignment in the U.S. Navy.
“Every day is different and my
knowledge is constantly being
tested. I have a good feeling
which comes from doing two
important jobs well.”
Lane, the son of Mr. and
Ray C. Lane
Mrs. Clinton Lane of Wrens, is
the legal officer and Standard
Tension Replenishment
Alongside Method (STREAM)
division officer aboard the
combat store ship USS
Concord which recently
completed a seven month
deployment with the U.S.
Sixth Fleet in the
Mediterranean Sea.
During the deployment,
Concord was assigned as the
primary supply support ship in
the Mediterranean and was
responsible for providing
provisions, consumable
supplies and repair parts to all
ships of the Sixth Fleet.
Concord received and
delivered over 22,600 tons of
supplies, replenished 170 ships,
issued 1,400 emergency repair
parts, and exchanged
$1,000,000 in foreign
currency. In providing these
services, Concord steamed
29,000 miles and made 41 port
calls.
“I think that my job is
important because the
Concord’s mission is providng
service to the fleet,” explained
Lane. “Without an effective
team effort by the STREAM
division which I’m in charge of,
the ship would be unable to
accomplish its mission
successfully.
“My division is responsible
for transferring supplies to
other ships, usually by means
of winches we have on the
Concord,” said Lane. “Keeping
the gear operational and in
good repair is a challenge. We
do maintenance daily on the
winches and test them at least
once a week to make sure
everything is okay.
Besides the long, hard
working hours at sea, Lane also
enjoyed many travel
opportunities during the
deployment.
“This is my first extended
cruise. It was a real learning
experience. I made interesting
port calls and learned much
more about the equipment that
I was responsible for,” declared
the chemistry major from
Savannah State College.
Even though his day-to-day
division officer responsibilities
were taxing at times, Lane said
that his greatest challenge came
from being a watchstander on
the bridge of the Concord.
