Coca-Cola contest
for whites only
CHICAGO - “The black
community here and those
elsewhere in the nation, along
with the black press greatly
resent and are strongly
protesting Coca-Cola’s current
PiBB Girl Contest because of
its racist nature,” according to
John H. Sengstacke, president
of the National Newspaper
Publishers Association.
Although millions of blacks
purchase and drink this
popular soft drink, the
company’s contest is geared
strictly for its white customers.
The $5,000 contest, begun
on April 1, seeks entrants who

Dr. Vivian U. Robinson,

College, has been appointed to
a Fuller E. Callaway
Professorial Chair of English.
The new position will cause her
salary to be higher than the
president of the college and 50
percent higher than the top
paid professor, according to
Paine President Julius S. Scott
Jr.
In appointing Dr. Robinson
to the Chair, Dr. Scott said his
decision was an easy one. “No
one outshines her and her
accomplishments. I have a
great deal of enthusiasm about

‘blatantly racist,’ the Rev.

of Hales Franciscan High

students, informed the
Coca-Cola Company on April

it was immediately apparent
that no minorities need apply,
that the contest was sexist,
offensive, unenlightened and
demeaning to all women.

“It will give an instant lift to

Dr. Scott said that Paine
wishes to reverse the trend of
many major universities where
the best professors do little
teaching. “The best people on
a faculty ought to be teaching.
The highest awards ought to go
to teachers,” he said, adding
that he would like to do some
teaching himself.

wrote, “We would not have
intentionally developed a
promotion that offended
anyone” and concedes that the
contest could be open to
interpretation (of being racist).
Another company
spokesman, Frank R.
Stansberry, said Coke bottlers
around the country are being
asked to remove the
commercial promotion from
the market place. While the
contest will be halted,
Stansberry further said that
legal obligations would require
the Coca-Cola honor
commitments to a substantial
number of individuals who
entered the program since its
April 1 beginning.
NNPA President John
Scott said, “We renard this
appointment in perpetuity .’
Dr. Robinson, who was
runner-up to Dr. Scott when he
was elected president in 1974,
said she was overwhelmed by
the announcement. “While 1
enjoyed being an
administrator, my first love is
teaching. I’m happy to return
to the classroom. 1 hope to live
up to the responsibilities and
expectations of Paine College
and the Callaway Foundation.”
The appointment will be
effective July 1. Dr. Scott said
an announcement would be
made this week, regarding a
successor to Dr. Robinson as
Sengstacke believes the
program discontinuance is not
quick enough. “I regret that
Coca-Cola couldn’t end the
contest completly - despite the
legal implications.” .
"The tact that they have
some entries and are going to
continue the contest in another
form is still an insult to the
black community,” Sengstacke
stated.
“It would seem to me that
they could end their legal
obligations by paying the top
contestants $5,000 each and
forget it,” Sengstacke added.
Black protesters feel that the
contest should be cancelled
and that Coca-Cola should
publish a public apology.

Paine College had a Callaway
