Thoughts to Live By
There is
but one way
By Imam Aqeel Hasan
In an effort to stimulate
human dignity I find it
necessary to deal with human
development. First, the word
human is a compound word
taken from two words. The
first being Hu or Humus which
means earth and the other is
man which means mind or
moral thinking being. It is also
essential to mention that the
word being as in “human
being” means conscious and
not just existence.
The earth, as we know, is a
womb of life. We know this
because every living thing on
the earth got its birth from the
earth. We know the earth has
an odor, that odor is the smell
of the natural forces of
fertility. In order for the earth
to produce life, it must be
fertile. This odor is the natural
mixing of the elements or
chemicals of creation. We
know that the farmer takes and
puts fertilization on the land to
help produce his crops. This
fertilization carries an awful
odor but yet it produces many
crops. It is the same with God’s
creation. The earth sometimes
smell’s awful, but look at the
beautiful life all around us that
that awful smelling earth has
produced. This teaches us that
things don’t always have to
smell good or look good to be
of good nature.
We have come to know
through science that man is a
Homo Sapien. Homo Sapien
means thinking being. Because
we are able to think we produce
what is called personalities or
characteristics. If the
characteristics possess real
human qualities while
implicating sound maturity
based on the nature of the
feminine or masculine gender,
we can at that point say this
person is man, or mind, or a
moral thinking being. So let’s
discuss the connection between
Hu or Humus meaning earth
and man or mind meaning
moral thinking being. The hu
or earth is the obvious
foundation for life whether
that life is plant or animal does
not matter. So because life gets
its start from the earth and

Mrs. Ora Thompson
Mrs. Ora Crawford
Thompson was honored as
“Woman of the Year” at St.
Mark United Methodist Church
during its annual Women’s Day
observance.

Mississippi and received her

in Holly Springs. She did
further study at Fisk

She is interested in the total
church program, but most her
work has been with the
women’s mission program. She

must depend on the earth to
maintain its existence along the
natural lines, we sometimes
decribe the earth as a vital
functioning part in the forces
of creation we call mother
nature. Mother here implies the
creation has the forces of
natural birth. The mind must
feed on the natural creation to
maintain its existence. In the
creation we find law, order,
peace, agreement, compassion,
sentiment, feelings, emotions,
humbleness, humility,
submission, obedience, will
power, dedication and love.
These are all very vital parts of
human development.
In order to progress as a
mind we must be alive to the
natural environment created by
Almighty God. This is where
being or consciousness comes
in. The mind must be morally
conscious in order for the
individual to respond to his
own needs as well as the needs
of others. His environment will
shape mind to a great extent,
however, God has place before
him order even in the mist of
confusion. If our life is being
clustered with confusion, we
should focus our attention
directly on God’s creation in
order to see that peace can
come out of confusion.
However, on the other hand, if
we are not conscious of our
environment, we become dead
to it. If we don’t allow our
minds to touch bases with the
earth and the total creation
that it might be feed naturally
by God, we will die a mental
suicidal death of starvation for
failing to feed the mind. To
conclude this I would like to
say that the human being is a
earthly mind that is morally
conscious to nature and its
surroundings. Human Dignity
is the reward given to us by
Almight God when we rise
above the petty things that
impede human progress such as
idle worship, racism,
immorality, deception,
ignorance, gossip, slander and
persecution.
So remember, God is but
one God, Truth is but one
Truth and the way is but one
way, which is the Right way.
