SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR - Mrs. Bennie
Mae Williams was named Senior Citizen of the Year at
the Annual Citizen’s picnic recently at the Julian Smith
Casino. Tim Maund, director of the Area Agency on
Aging, presented the award. Mrs. Williams was chosen
from nominations from persons in 13 counties.
Her husband, Solomon A. Williams, was present when
she received the honor. She has two children, Samuel B.
Williams and Mary Stewart. She has five grandchildren.
McDuffie County has
open house for elderly
On last Sunday, the
McDuffie County Council on
Aging, Inc. held “Open House”
at the Senior Citizens Center as
a part of the “Kick-off’ for
Older Americans Month.
With Directof Nancy Drane
presiding, participants on the
program included Col. John
Simons, President of the
Advisory Council of the Area
Agency on Aging, from
Augusta, who offered prayer, a
brief historical glance by the
President of McDuffie County
Council on Aging, Inc. Clara
West and City Manager Bob
Flanders in bringing greetings
expressed hope for the future
and said, “tire Senior Citizens
program should be a
community project: It’s
important that all citizens be
vital participants in the
community and continue to
increase services and garner
support from other segments
of the community. The city
looks forward to partnership in
the movement forward.”
Commissioner Forest
Prather cited support and
services for the program
emphasizing the role of the
Board of Commissioners in the
renovation of the Coca Cola
building for the unification of
many services. A Litany of
Praise was led by Rev. Jack
Lamb followed by the ribbon
cutting with the following
participants: Mrs. Annie
Paschal, 103 years of age; Mrs.
Jeanette Cummings, Director
of Area Agency on Aging;
Commissioner Herb Widner;
Charter Member Laura Rogers;
and AAA Administrative
Assistant of Aging Services
Kevin Mack.
Among the many visitors
out of town were Mrs. Ruth
Crawford, Executive Director
of the Shiloh Comprehensive
Community Center with 20
participants of Augusta,
Silver-Haired Legislators Curtis
Roberts and Bennie Mae
Williams of Richmond County
and Atty. Sandra Applegate of
Legal Services in Augusta.
Cabinet official
to speak at Paine
James A. Joseph, under
secretary, Department of
Interior, will be the
commencement speaker for
Paine College June 8 at 3 pan.
The service will be held in the
Gilbert-Lambuth Chapel on
campus.
As under secretary, Joseph is
the second highest ranking
official in the Department of
the Interior. He serves as
secretary in the secretary’s
absence. Joseph came to his
Interior post after five years as
vice president at Cummins
Engine Company, where he
also served as president of the
Cummins Engine Foundation.
He began his career as an
officer in tire United States
Army at Fort Devens, Mass.,
where he served as commander
of a Medical Detachment and
taught ROTC cadets from New
England colleges. With degrees
from Southern University and
Yale, he subsequently served as
a member of the faculty and
administration at Stillman
College in Tuscaloosa, Ala.,
and as a leader of the local civil
rights movement.
After teaching and
administration assignments at
Claremont College in
Claremont, Calif., he became
executive director of the
Irwin-Sweeney-Miller and
Cummins Engine Foundation,
directing a national staff with
programs in Los Angels,
Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit and
Washington, D.C.
He was appointed as vice
president of Cummins Engine
Company, where his work
brought him to the attention
of Cecil Andrus, the Secretary
Young volunteers sought
for Red Cross work
Young people who are at
least 13 years of age who are
interested in becoming Red
Cross volunteers in local
hospitals, nursing homes and
youth development centers

Treasury Department’s
Advisory Committee on Private
Philanthropy and Public Needs
as well as the Executive
Committee of the Council on
Foundations, he has a long
history of involvement with
public policy issues.
Contributor to a wide variety
of books and periodicals on
contemporary social issues, he
is the recipient of many special
awards.
Joseph, who is an ordained
minister, presently serves as a
trustee of Union Theological
Seminary in New York and
Atlanta University. He lives
with his wife and two children
in McLean, Va.
