“What parents should know
S Black is
‘dutiful’
By Adrienne Perry ...
We have all been convinced
that ‘Black is Beautiful’ now
we must work on the slogan
‘Black is Dutiful’ for it is vital
to our survival as a race.
A Chicago school
superintendent had the wisdom
to recommend that almost
one-half of the eighth graders
be retained because they
couldn’t read well enough to
go on and benefit from liigh
school courses. Some parents
were outraged and some were
relieved. Someone was finally
calling a halt to mediocrity.
Rev. Jesse Jackson agrees
with tire above position and
has proposed that all television
be shut off during the evening
and parents work with their
kids and see that they do their

homework. Beautiful and
dutiful black people 1) try tc
motivate their children so theii
children may have fewei
hassles to contend with, 2)
know where their children are
and who they are associating
with, 3) teach their children
who they are. This sounds like
asking for a miracle but, it is a
duty of all parents to try.
Judges can get us into
medical and law schools but
they can’t get us out. Jackson
comments, “What does it
matter if the doors of
opportunity swing open and
we are to drunk to stagger
through? What does it matter if
we can get into the university
and the university does not get
into us?” We have a large stake
in this country and we must
continue to pueh toward
excellence in all areas of
endeavor.
Treatment
procedure
changes
AUGUSTA-Several new
changes concerning treatment
of state prisoners at Talmadge
Memorial Hospital have been
agreed upon by representatives
of the Medical College of
Georgia’s administration and
officials of the Department of
Offender Rehabilitation.
The new measures have
come about as a result of the
recent kidnapping of an MCG
physician by a Reidsville
prisoner who overpowered a
DOR officer and escaped from
a dental clinic at MCG.
According to Charles
Burden, superintendent of the
maximum security unit at
Talmadge Hospital, the number
of correctional officers
escorting prisoners has been
doubled. The number of
physical restraints placed on
prisoners will be increased and
inmate hospital unifbrms have
been changed in order to make
them more readily
indentifiable. No visitors will
be allowed in the unit.
Burden says, “For the time
being all clinic visits to the
hospital will be cancelled,
except for dire emergencies.
There are six clinic rooms in
the maxi-care unit at Talmadge
and we intend to use these
treatment rooms more in tire
future in order to improve
security.
“Everything is being done to
insure that maximum safety
precautions are being taken for
all involved,” says Burden.
Additionally Burden says
more correctional officers will
be hired for the unit and they
will receive in-depth training
concerning the new security
measures.
In effort to minimize the
number of inmate visits to
Talmadge Hospital, three new
physicians have been hired at
Reidsville. Inmates will also be
more thoroughly searched
before, during and after visits
to Talmadge Hospital.
