Hawkins Family Visits Augusta
r ‘ i I
L I
The Hawkins Family of "Oh Happy Day” fame,
was in Augusta and Athens this week.
In June, 1968, LaMont
Bench, owner of Century
Custom Recording
Service, a firm that
specialized in low budget
location recordings of
high school band concerts
and church musicals,
recorded a 46-voice choir,
organized by 25-year old
Edwin Hawkins. The
Choir wanted an album to
sell at the church’s up
coming National Youth
Congress in Washington,
D. C. They hoped that the
proceeds would cover the
expenses of their trip.
Early the next year,
discjockey Abe“Voco”
Kesh opened his Sunday
morning show on KSAN
with the first cut on the
second side of the album
a song called “Oh
Happy Day.” Buddah
Records soon noticed the
unusual interest “Oh
Happy Day” was
generating in cities
where it was getting
limited airplay and
acquired distribution
rights to a song that was
to sell more than a
million copies nationally
and make Edwin
Hawkins the best known
gospel name since
Mahalla Jackson,
different for me than any
other tune that I
rearranged. At that time
I was taking many older
tunes and rearranging
them.”
The choir turned
professional, changed
their name to the Edwin
Hawkins Singers, and
swelled to over 60 voices
as “Oh Happy Day”
broke across the country
in the spring of 1969.
Eventually cut back
to amore manageable
size of 22, the choir
played such secular
locations as Madison
square Garden and
Caesar’s Palace, and
toured Europe regularly
for five years. By 1973,
however, the
engagements began to

fall off and Edwin
reduced the group to ten.
He had been unable to
come up with another
record that could match
“Oh Happy Day’s” un
precendented success.
Three years ago
Edwin’s brother, Rev.
Walter Hawkins, who, as
a shy youth of 19, had
sung anonymously in the
chorus on “Oh Happy
Day,” had his own
church, an East Oakland
“Oh Happy Day” was
an old hymn to which
Edwin had added some
new lyrics, jazz har
monies and a laid-back
Latin-flavored soul beat.
“It was just another
tune among many that I
rearranged,” Edwin
recalled recently during
a rehearsal break at his

Blacks Made Advances
In Education
....Black Americans
chalked up important
educational gains during
the 19705, particularly at
the high school level,
according to a new report
from the U. S. Depart
ment of Commerce’s
Census Bureau.
One of the most
dramatic gains involves
Blacks with a high school
education, the total of
whom reached an all
time high. In 1970, only 56
percent of Blacks 25 to 29
years old had completed
highschool. By the end of
1979, the percentage with
high school diplomas in
the same age category
had risen to 75 percent.
The report notes that
Blacks continued to make
important gains in higher
education. For example,
the proportion with
college degrees, among
those 25 to 29 years old,
increased from 7 percent
in 1970 to more than 12
percent by the end of
1979. An even greater
Oakland hills. “There
was no special moment
for that particular song. I
think that every moment
that you’re inspired is a
special moment, but I
don’t think that was
storefront called the Love
Center. He also had the
hottest choir in the Bay
Area.
Another miracle
occurred. “Love Alive,”
by Walter Hawkins and
the Love Center Choir
was an instant success.
Though it did not go pop
like “Oh Happy Day,” the
album has sold over
200,000 copies to date, an
amazing success by
gospel standards. “Love
Alive” has remained in
the Top Five on
“Billboard” Magazine’s
gospel album chart for
more than two years
increase was noted for
Blacks who had com
pleted one year of college
or more; the percentage
of those age 25 to 29 rose
sharply from 17 percent
in 1970 to 31 percent by
1979. Still, college
education continued to be
more common for Whites
than Blacks. As the 1970 s
drew to a close, 17 per
cent of Whites 25 and over
had completed 4 or more
years of college com
pared with only 8 percent
of Black adults.
