Lions defeat Jaguars
The Paine College
Lions defeated the
Augusta College Jaguars
in overtime Saturday
night 62-58.
“We just didn’t want
to lose again,” said Paine
Coach Ronnie Spry after
his team rallied for the
victory in the Augusta-
Richmond County Civic
Center. “We had lost five
games in a row. They
were all close and we
didn’t feel we should have
lost any of them.”
The Jaguars had a 10-
point lead at sv-i0 with a

little under four minutes
left to play after having
trailed most of the game
until early in the second
half. It all led down to a
once-and-one free throw
chance the Lions had with
AC 2 points ahead and
two seconds to play.
Johnny Dixon missed
the first free throw, but
before the final buzzer
could sound, Lennie
Mac Neal put the ball
back up and in for the
tying basket.
“That just shouldn’t
happen,” said AC Coach
Marvin Vanover. “We
had five men in there
rebounding and they had
just one.”
Dixon, who hadn’t
scored in the second half
of regulation play, hit the
first field goal for Paine
in the overtime. He later
hit the first of two key
overtime point - Anthony
Coles added a pair of free
throws -- which gave the
Lions what proved to be
an unbeatable 4-point
lead at 60-58 with 44
seconds toplay.
Spry credited his
team’s late free throw
showing as being a key
factor
“I think we made
only about 50 per cent -
actually five of nine (55
per cent) - in the first
half. That’s not good
enough, but we made
them down the stretch
when they counted,” said
Spry whose team now
has a 6-7 record.
In the regulation
game, Tim Ridley and
Mac Neal both hit pairs of
foul shots when Paine
was 10 points down.
Added to the goals by
Ridley and Ricky
Radford, that enabled the
Lions to be in position for
McNeal’s follow shot to
tie the score.
Vanover pointed to
seven turnovers in the
first half as an indication
his team wasn’t playing
sharply in the first half.
“We had seven bad
passes which Paine stole
and turned into baskets.
That accounted for over
half of their first-half
points. The turnovers
didn’t come under
pressure. They were
inside our offense. We
just didn’t have enough
movement and execution
in our offense,” Vanover
said.
Paine employed its
patience game well as the
Lions played tough on
defense.
“I was surprised that
Paine was able to play so
patiently,” said
Vanover. “They did a
good job withit.”
“The reason we
played more slowly was
STAY IN HOT WATER MORE ECONOMICAUY
WITH ENERGY SAVINGS UP TO 20%.
Abundant hot water. Nothing keeps you supplied
with it as efficiently and economically as a dependable
gas water heater.
Gallon for gallon and size for size, a gas water I
heater replaces hot water faster. So even at times of
peak use, your supply lasts longer. And, because of the 1
efficiency and economy of gas, a gas water heater costs <
less to operate.
A number of models we offer have earned the
designation “Energy Efficient,” which means they save i
because Augusta had
scouted us against
Voorhees, when we
played fast break
basketball. I want us to
play disciplined
basketball. My theory is
‘shoot when you have it
and set it up when you
don’t,’’said Spry.
Mac Neal, who made
10 of 13 free throws, led
Paine with 20 points,
followed by Dixon with 15
and Radford with 11.
Mac Neal also had 13
rebounds.
For Augusta, Brian
Scott led with 24 points as
James Richardson
backed him up with 16.
Richardson pulled down a
game-high 19 rebounds.
Augusta now has an 8-4
record.
Paine held the upper
hand during a rough,
slow-paced first half with
the Lions leading 25-20 at
the break.
The Jags led only
briefly during the half at
16-14 as Paine was in
front the rest of the half,
once leading by 6 at 12-6.

Daniels - the Jags had
their lead. Paine came
back with 5 points by
Dixon on a fast break
layup and a 3-point play
plus a free throw by
Ridley to be back on top
at 20-16.
AC’s Delbert Haynes
hit a 12-foot bank shoot to
cut the lead to just 2, but
that was as close as the
Jags could get.
With a little less than
a minute and a half to
play, Dixon hit a jumper
for the last points before
intermission that gave
Paine its 5-point lead.
