In 1976, he challenged the leadership of the NAACP by supporting a female candidate for presidency. The candidate was not elected, but he became a force to be reckoned with within the branch. In 1979, he became a member of the NAACP’s million dollar club and a life member. In 1980, he was appointed chairperson for the Annual Spring Awards Banquet. In December, 1980 he was elected President of the Evansville Indiana Branch of NAACP. Leroy Johnson,the coordinator of Chaplain Services for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, is the speaker for Religious Emphasis Week at Paine College Jan. 25-30. A verper service at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Gilbert-Lambuth Chapel will begin the week of activities. Lt. Col. Johnson will give four speeches during the week. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, he will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Gilbert- Lambuth chapel. He will speak at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Lyceum Lecture Series On “Imagination” Begins A quarter long Lyceum Series on “Imagination” held at Augusta College beginning in January will be sponsored by the Dean of Students Office, it was announced today by AC sociologist Ernestine H. Thompson who is coordinating the series. Lectures held every Tuesday at noon in the Lecture room of Butler Hall began Jan. 13 and will continue through Feb. 17. All lectures are free and open to the public. The series began with Dr. Joseph LeDoux, neuroplychologist and author. The seminar will stress teaching, communicating, responding to and practicing values. Chaplain Johnson was a civilian pastor for 10 years in the California Conference of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and has served for over 17 ye? -r as a chaplain in the U.S. Army. While serving in Kaiserlautem, Germany, for two years , he had the professor of classics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will speak Jan. 20 on “The Internalization of the Muse: the Discovery of the Imagination in Antiquity?”. On Feb. 3, Dr. Lewis Lipsitz, a poet and political scientist, will speak on “Poetry and Politics.” Dr. Lipsitzis with the Department of Political Science at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
