Montclair Man Murdered A 42-year-old businessman fo.qid shot to death at his residence in the Montclair subdivision Saturday MORNING. Richmond County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Ronnie Strength identified the victim as John Robert Brickie, 42, 3205 Winding Wood Place, owner of Brickies One -Hour Dry Cleaners, 3739 Washington Road. Brickie was killed by a pistol shot in the forehead, Strength said. Brickie’s parents found the body at about 9:30 a.m. fully clothed and lying on the floor of the combination kitchen den of the ranch-style residence. They came to the house after he failed to appear at work Saturday morning and they could not reach him on the telephone, according to Strength. Strength said the bullet wound was from a large-caliber handgun, possibly a .38. Inmate Charged in June Murder of Auto Dealer Murder and auto theft charges have been filed against a 25-year-old Richmond County Jail inmate in Connection with the J une 4 slaying of automobile dealer B.H. Newman, Sheriff J.B. Dykes said Friday. John Willie Williams, 2000 block of Dallas Drive, who has been held on a burglary charge since Dec. 8, was being interrogated late Thursday afternoon about the burglary when he mentioned the the murder to Investigators Bruce Powers and Ronnie Strength, Dykes said. According to Dykes, Williams first offered to lead the investigators to the killer, but inadvertently mentioned to them “information only the perpetrator would have known.” After putting the Wohian Raped, Robbed .... a 53-y ea r -old Pineview Drive woman reported she was raped, choked and robbed Friday night at her residence. The woman said she was in her house at 8:38 p.m. when a blackman knocked on the door and inquired about another man who had previously lived in the area according to Richmond County sheriff’sdeputies. The woman told him the man had moveu away, then closed the door and went into the living room. However, when she went back to lock the door,she found him coming inside again. She locked the door, but he kicked it in, entered the house, choked and raped the woman, the report stated. Afterwards he took $2 from the woman’s purse and left in a beige automobile. Strength said only that “the case is under investigation.’’ Strength did confirm that a metal cash box was missing from the house. Brickie reportedly took the box home with him from work m ost nights. According to an early report, there were signs of a struggle at the house, but Strength said that was incorrect. A screen on a side window of the house was torn out. Strength would not say whether the torn screen may be connected to the incident. Neither of Brickie’s automobiles, a late model compact and a larger sedan, were taken from the house. However, the lights on the larger car, sitting in the carport, had been left on overnight. suspect on a polygraph, investigators found “some physical evidence linking him to the crime,” Dykes said. He said that premature release of the nature of the evidence could prejudice its use in court, and declined to say what that evidence is. Dykes and Chief Investigator Johnny O. Brickie’s body was taken to University Hospital, where an autopsy is scheduled to be held today. Several neighbors of the slain man in the quiet, white-collar subdivision said they were at home Friday night but heard nothing unusual. Brickie’ residence is adjoined by one other residence, a playground on one side and pine woods in the back. Brickie's killing was the second recent slaying to shake Montclair residents. Just a block away from Brickie’s residence is the house where kidnap-murder victim Valerie White Newsome grew up and where her mother still resides. Neighbors expressed shock that such tragedy should strike someone in their quiet neighborhood. “If you can’t be safe in this neighborhood, you can’t be safe anywhere,” said one. They described Brickie as a hard working, quiet man who lived alone and kept to himself but was always ready with a smile and a cheerful word. Brickie was so punctual, “could set your watch by him, said one man. Six days a week he was on his way to work by 7:30 a.m. not returning home until about 8 p.m.,he said. A resident of the quiet street for 12 years, Brickie lived alone since his divorce about lOyears ago, according to one family member. The two were arrested in Augusta Monday night after an auto chase with Richmond County sheriff’s deputies. When arrested, the suspects gave the names Johnny Page 3 Morgan and James Miller. At that time, the two were charged with two counts of burglary each, but subsequent investigation linked them with 10 burglariea I* North Augusta, one Augusta burglary, an auto theft and a case of aggravated assault.
