By Brother Richard William
Let us now make an
acrostic of the word
‘‘Christian” by taking
each letter and selecting a
word beginning with that
letter which will point out
some characteristics of a
Christian.
Converted - The first
letter of the word
Christian - “C” is also the
first letter of the word
converted. A Christian is
one converted away from
the love and practice of
sin to Christ and His way
of life. When the disciples
once clamored and
quarreled among
themselves over who
should be greatest in the
kingdom, ‘‘Jesus called a
little child unto him, and
set him in the midst of
them, and said, ‘Verily I
say unto you, except ye be
converted and become as
little children, ye shall not
enter into the kingdom of
heaven (Matt. 18:2-3).”’
In a word, he means
one can not be a Christian
without conversion. An
unconverted man is an
unchanged man, one still
in the love and practice of
sin. He is not fit for the
society of heaven.fand
would be miserable if
suddenly placed in the
midst of those who are
singing, praying,
preaching, and
worshipping the Lord, and
they would not be changed
in spirit if transported to
glory-
Moving from one
place cr country to another
does not change people in
heart. David said, “The
law of the Lord is perfect,
converting the soul.” (Psa.
19:7) ‘‘This law of the
Lord includes repentance,
a turning from sin. Peter
said, “Repent ye
therefore, and be
converted, that your sins
may be blotted out (Acts
3:19).” Paul was sent to
convert, return the
Gentiles from darkness to
light that they may receive
the forgiveness of sins
(Acts 26:16-18).
There is no difference
in repenting and being
converted that sins may be
blotted out, as in Acts
3:19, and in repenting and
being baptized for the
remission erf sins, as in
Acts 2:38. One’s will and
purposes are changed
when he repents. One’s
relationship is changed in
being baptized, as in
naturalization or in
marriage.
After conversion one
must be faithful. (Rev.
2:10) Jesus said unto Peter
concerning his denial of
Christ and fall, “And
when thou art converted,
strengthen thy brethren.”
(Lk.22;32.) When one
ceases to follow Christ he
ceases to be a Christian
ceases to be Christ-like.
James says, “Brethren, if
any of you do err from the
truth, and one convert
him; let him know, that he
which converteth the
sinner from the error of
his way shall save a
soul from death, and
shall hide a multitude of
sins.” (Jas. 5:19-20). *
Humility - The letter
"H” is the second letter
of the word Christian, and
is the first letter of the
word “humility.” We are
commanded to have the
mind erf Christ who
humbled himself and
became obedient unto

Who Is A Christian
death for us. (Phil. 2:5-
11.) Jesus said unto his
disciples, “Whosoever
therefore shall humble
himself as this little child,
the same is greatest in the
kingdom of heaven (Matt.
18:4).”
Christians are humble
and teachable as little
children. Jesus said also,
“For every one that
exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that
humbleth himself shall be
exalted. (Lk. 18:14).” One
who is proud, haughty,
and conceited is not a
Christian, for he is not
humble like the Master
who left us an example of
humility in washing the
dirty feet of his quarreling
disciples. (Jn. 13).
Surely, no one could
imagine J esus strutting
down the street like a
peacock, making all
around him afraid to
approach him. The way
up, is down. He would go
up in God’s sight must,
first of all, go down in
meekness ~ and humble
himself as a little child.
No one can go up to the
pinnacle of the “house
top” of Christianity
without first going byway
of the “abasement.”
Reverence - The third
letter in the word
“Christian” is the letter
“R” which is the first
letter of the word
"reverence.” We cannot
be Christians without
reverence. “God is greatly
to be feared in the
assembly of the saints,
and to be had in reverence
of all them that are about
him.” (Psa. 89:7) God
has killed people in the
very act of worship offered
to him because of their
lack of reverence, just as
he did Nadab and Abihu
whom he burned with fire
from heaven in their false
worship (Lev. 10:1-3) Paul
says, ‘Wherefore we
receiving a kingdom which
cannot be moved, let us
have grace, whereby we
may serve God acceptably
with reverence and godly
fear; for our God is a
consuming fire.”
Some are so wicked
and irreverent as to’
impenitently take God’s
name in vain. It is as true
now as ever that “Thou
shalt not take the name of
the Lord thy God in vain;*
for the Lord will not hold
him guiltless that taketh
his name in vain.”
“Hallowed be thy name”-
sacred and holy is thy
name to us. (Matt.6:9.)
We have come to the
sad plight that about all
the use the masses of the
people have for the name
of God is to use it as a
“cuss-word,” a word to
curse and swear by. Such
is awful wickedness before
God! “He sent redemption
unto his people: he hath
commanded his covenant
for ever: holy and
reverend is his name.”
Psa. 111:9.)
This is the only time
the word “reverend” is
found in our English
Bible, and then it is
applied unto God’s name.
His name represents him
and stands for all he is. as
our flag stands for and
represents all that is dear
to us in our land. For a
foreigner to disrespect that
flag is to endanger his
own life.
Furthermore, it is a
lack of reverence and
humility for preachers to
Baptist Convention. He
was the organizer and
Director of the First
Independence National
Bank of Detroit, and is
associated with the
National Negro Business
League and the Booker T.
Washington Business
Association. He is part
time Chaplain of the V.A.
Hospital in Allen Park.
Michigan.
Dr. Butler is a
member of the Board of
Directors for the
Morehouse School of
Religion and the
Interdenominational
Tehological Center in
Atlanta, Ga., and is on the
. Advisory Board of the
Michigan Consolidated Gas
Company.
In 1962, the Michigan
Chronlde gave Dr. Butler
the “Man of the Year”
award. He was listed in
Marquis’ Who’s Who in
1974, and was cited by the
Detroit News as the most
call themselves
“Reverend.” We never
read in the Bible of the
“Rev. Paul," nor of the
“Right Rev. Peter,” nor of
the “Very Right Rev.
John.’’Jesus reproved
those of his day who loved
“to be called of men,
Rabbi, Rabbi,” and he
said, “Be not ye called
Rabbi: for one is your
Master, even Christ; and
all ye are brethren. And
call no man your father
upon the earth; for one is
your Father, which is in
heaven. Neither be ye
called masters; for one is
your Master, even
Christ.” Matt. 23:7-9).
Most denominational
preachers are so “puffed
up” that they are insulted
when asked to give their
authority for what they
are practicing and
teachipg. I once called a
Cathcrfic Priest to ask him
a question about his
doctrine, and he would not
even ,/alk to me because I
did pot call him “Father.”
He said I had not treated
him with due respect. But
this scripture forbids the
' lealling of such one
“Father " in a religious
sense, or in an
ecclesiastical sense. Yes
"Ye are brethren,” said
Jesus.
Innocent •
Christians are innocent, a
word beginning with the
fourth letter of the word
"Christian.” When Jesus
sent his disciples under
the limited commission he
said, “Be ye therefore
wise as serpents, and
harmless as doves.”
(Matt. 10:16) I have never
heard of a dove’s harming
any one; and I am not
afraid of a Christian.
I am not afriad of his
wealth, his power, his
matches, his fist, his gun,
not even his tongue.
Christians are harmless like
the Master. While they are
not sinlessly perfet, they
are not dangerous, but
rather innocent and
harmless. Paul said, "Do
all things without
murmurings and disputings:
that ye may be blameless
and harmless, the sons of
God, without rebuke, in the
midst of a crooked and
perverse nation, among
whom ye shine as lights in
the world.” (Phil. 2:14-15.)
If you would like to.
become a Christian, come
while we stand and sing.
Don’t delay another day.
Come now!

questions, feel free to call
