of our leading justice when
it comes time to deal with

It's not a new story.

Payton Rushes Toward NFL Mark
CANTON, OHIO- The
Chicago Bears’ Walter
Payton now rates as the
prime candidate to
eventually surpass Jim
Brown as pro football’s
all-time rushing leader.
That was the most
significant possibility that
developed in the Pro
Football Hall of Fame’s Top
Twenty rushing rankings
during the 1980 season.
The popular and
attractive top Twenty
display features rankings of
the top individual career
statistical leaders in
rushing, passing, receiving
himself in. Like the Willie
Mays affair. Where is he
now? Why haven’t we
heard from him as we go to
press. His was a voice that
should have been heard
almost immediately.
His was a voice that
should have been saying
the game of baseball will
not tolerate the anti
bf.’ba\ior of a Billy Martin,
wjhp the hell does Billy
Martin think he is anyway?
And how can a
coifflhissioner permit a Bill
Madlock to receive a 15 day
suspension (richly deserved)
and scoring. Changed
weekly during every
football season, the
rankings in the Hall’s
display differ from other
similar listing in that
statistics from the old All-
America Football
Conference are included as
well as those from the
American and National
Football Leagues.
After just six seasons,
Payton has totaled 8,386
yards and if he can
continue his 1398 yard-per
season pace, he would
move ahead of Brown’s
long-standing record late in
Two Black Quarterbacks Ready To Shine
For the first time ever,
the Shrine all-star football
classic will feature two
Black quarterbacks on the
same team when Santa
Barbara High’s Randall
Cunningham Van Nuys’
Mike Owens take the field
for the 30th annual Shrine
Football Classic Saturday,
July 25 at the Rose Bowl.
The two all-star signal
callers will be performing
for the North squad, which
has won six of the past
eight games in the past
decade. This year, the
North team is also blessed
with four prep All.

Commissioner afraid of
Martin?
Is everyone in baseball
intimidated by Martin. Is
Bowie Kuhn afraid of
Martin? Is George
Steinbrenner the only man
in baseball with guts... Tell
me something in a hurry
because this whole thing
stinks, and I mean
stinky...stink!
Lee MacPheil should
be fired. Obviously he’s
the 1983 season. Brown
amassed 12,312 yards in his
nine NFL seasons.
Surpassing Brown’s
stupendous total, a record
that has remained
untouchable for almost two
decades, will not be an
easy task for Payton
however. For years, it
appeared as though O.J.
Simpson would challenge
the Brown record. But
when O.J. retired after 11
pro seasons, in 1979, his
11.236-yard career mark
was over a 1,000 yards shy
of the record.
Fairfax High’s Neil Hope,
El Camino Real’s Tony
Lewis and Darryl Titsworth
of Garey High.
Cunningham led Santa
Barbara to the CIF Coastal
Conference title match
where it lost to Long Beach
Poly. The younger brother
of the New England
Patriots and ex-USC
fullback, Sam, completed
136 passes of 246 attempts
for 2,334 yards and 24
TD’s.
Owens led the Wolves
to the City 3-A
championship game where
it tied Narbonne for the
■crown 14-14. Owens
completed 132 passes of
afraid of Billy Martin. Is he
more concerned about the
color the man than the
severity of the act he
committed. I mean what’s
the deal?
What Billy Martin did
should not be tolerated by
major league baseball.
That’s what wrong with the
kids of America. They see
these crazy acts of ego and
they assume that’s the way
you should behave. High
school coaches and college
coaches see the Billy
Martin thing and they too
assume that’s the way to
'Franco Harris of the
Pittsburgh Steelers has also
been considered a prime
candidate but bis chances
diminished considerably
during the 1980 season,
when he gained just 789
yards. It was only the
second time in nine years
that Franco failed to break
the 1,000-yard barrier.
Harris now has 9,352
yards in nine seasons and
ranks with Brown, Simpson
and Payton as the only four
members of the Top
Twenty to average more
than 1,000. yards a
campaign.
232 attempts for 2,081
yards and 24 touchdowns.
He’s proved to be terrific
on the optin option and
rushed for 290 yards and
scored 13 TD’s himself.
Ecr’s Lewis was
another championship
performer as he led his
team to the City 4-A title
contest where it failed
against Banning. An All
City slection, he scored 18
TD’s operating from the
tailback position.
Also chosen to the
North’s squad was Blair
High’s Runningback
sensation, Fred Crutcher
who led the CIF in scoring
deal with umpires.
Well umpires are also
human. Don’t they have a
boiling point. Supposed
they behaved like the
players and managers.
What a day that would be.
And while Bowie Kuhn sits
picking bis nose, Billy
Martin is bending his elbow
and probably laughing at
the guy. Well it’s time the
baseball owners dumped
Kuhn and his whole staff.
But then again, that’s the
way they want their sport
to be administered. And
they have the perfect “Yes
Payton is tops in this
department with bis 1398-
yard seasonal pace. Brown
averaged 1368 yards in nine
seasons while Harris is
averaging 1039 yards.
Simpson’s seasonal average
was 1021 yards.
Harris did move up to
fourth place in the all-time
standings during the 1980
season and he would
actually rank in third place
if Joe Perry’s AAFC
accumulation (1345 yards in
two seasons) is not
included. As it is. Perry is
the third-place rusher with
9,723 yards gained in 16
27 touchdowns while
gaining 1,853 yards. He
will be teamed with Muir
High’s Ron Brown (who is
a sprinting star at the
moment), who was right
behind him in scoring, with
25 TD’s.
The North will also
