if they were mayor today.

Editorial
We were disappointed with Augusta College's
decision to permit a performance at the school by a
young boys’ choir from South Africa.
We agree that an Institution of higher learning
should provide a forum for all points of view.
In this case, however, there is no point of view to be
expressed, no information to be acquired.
There is simply a choir of young boys from South
Africa to be heard, enjoyed and appreciated. And
that is the point--these darling little boys can do
nothing but create goodwill for the most racist nation
on Earth. The boys don't bring a message; they are
the message. The same point has been made over and
over by the noted professor Marshal McLuhan in his
book, “The Medium is the Message,*’ and
subsequent works.
We are indeed disappointed that Augusta College
agreed to participate in South Africa’s
propoganda/scheme, closing its eyes to this most
important point. Certainly the nation saw this same
point when President Carter pulled the U.S. athletes
out of the Olympic games. The U.S. objected to the
Russian invasion of Afghanistan and refused to
participate in that grand athletic arena with a nation
that had so little regard for human rights. Carter
made a most legitimate point and the nation
supported him. The Black Student Union at Augusta
College is making the same point. But they are not
being supported by the administration of their
school.
Jimmy Carter, who ironically is not known for his
courage, saw wrong and opposed it. We know that
Augusta College sees the wrong in South Africa and
how this “inocent’’ choir performance relates io 1<
We hope that between now and October 14 rhe
college will find the courage to cancel it.

Mclntyre For Mayor
It is with a great deal of enthusiasm that we
endorse Ed Mclntyre for Mayor of Augusta.
He has demonstrated the ability to govern, having
twice served as chairman of the county commission.
He also served as chairman of the commission's
finance committee, and during that period the county
had more than a million dollar budget surplus.
Perhaps more important to Richmond County is
his vision and creativity. It was Mclntyre who
conceived of and proposed the Augusta-Richmond
County Civic Center. It was Mclntyre who was the
primary originator of the CSRA Business League
which has brought millions of dollars into this
community.
He was the founder of the Augusta Black Festival
as well as the Augusta Arts Cultural Association.
Both of these organizations have contributed
significantly to the cultural enrichment of this
community. It was Mclntyre who proposed to the
governor the creation of the Georgia Hall Os Fame
Commission.
Mclntyre has demonstrated an ability to work with ■
all segments of the community. And because he has
convinced many whites of his ability to lead, they not
only do not fear having him as the first Black mayor
of Augusta, many of them are supporting him as is
evidenced by the Mclntyre bumper stickers on their i
cars.
Augusta would do well to take advantage of this
opportunity to elect a man who can not only lead
well, but can help a city and its people to grow.
