BULL DOG Quarterback Ben Mungin (11) prepares to option pitch to tailback Henry Odom (out of photo) for one of his

South Carolina State advances to semi-finals
by Robert Caldwell
ORANGEBURG S.C.—The South Carolina State
Bulldogs Saturday defeated the Tigers of Tennessee
State 26-25 in ovet time before a full house, including
a large contingent from Augusta, and to advance to
the semi-final round of the NCAA Division 1-AA
playoffs.
In an exciting game that
matched a potent passing
attack against a powerful
running game, SCS
prevailed, ironically via
the passing arm of quar
terback Ben Mungin.
SCS scored in the first
quarter on an 18-yard run
by tailback Henry Odom,
who gained 163 yards on
29 carries. TSU came back
to tie the score at 6-6 on a

thought he was next in line

season as expected.
However, Gilliam

SCS looked as if they

At the close of the half
SCS had taken a 19-6 lead

If the Tennessee State

will be one of the most

It’s hard to figure how
Tennessee State comes
up with such outstanding
quarterbacks. Joe Gilliam
Jr. and Joe Adams played
Tennessee State and were
two of the finest signal
callers in the history of
black college football.
Now the Blue Tigers offer,

quickly scored on a 39
yard pass from Brian Ran

Jones to make the score
19-13 after TSU’s only
successful PAT of the
day.
Quarterback Brian
Ransom, who had waited
two years for Joe “747”
Odoms to graduate,
cranked up his passing arm
and showed why he was
among the leaders of the
N.C.A.A. in passing stats.
Coming into the game
Ransom had completed
199 of 338 passes for 2,837
yards and 18 TD’s.
On this day he would
