Pentecost was 50 days af
ter the ascension of Christ.
It means five of anything
with five in it. It was a great
day because it was the day
that life was given the chur
ch. It was the day the gospel
was first preached in facts.
It was the first day that men
were first added to the body
of Christ.
I. A look at the preacher
His name was Peter, just
a man, but a man on fire
for God. A preacher on fire
can set a church on fire. If
the preacher is cold and
lazy, so will the church be.
Now this preacher had
made some mistakes earlier
in life, but what preacher
has not? Just a few days
Christ was praying for him
because of his weakness.
You see, all preachers have
their weaknesses. Church
members need to under
stand this. A preacher is
just a man just like you.
There are times when he is
up and times when he is
down. But preachers are
human beings, don’t forget
that. The preacher in our
lesson was human. “Stand
up,” he said to some men in
Acts 10. “I am also a
man.” But look at our
preacher now, on fire for
God. It is not what he was
that counts, but what he is
now. This preacher has
been given the keys of the
kingdom. (Matt. 16:17-18)
He is about to insert those
keys into the door of the
kingdom to open them for
the first time. Let’s have a

11. Let’s listen to his sermon
I have heard all kinds of
sermons, good ones and
bad ones, and in between
ones. I have heard sermons
that tore me down and ser
mons that build me up. This
preacher has something to
say. All preachers must. He
begins his sermon by
relating the gospel facts that
Christ died, was put on a
cross for your sins and
mine. He did not excuse
them for their sin, but poin
ted them out. Preachers
today must point out sin.
People want to receive help.
The preacher must give that
help. He then cut them to
their hearts and they cried
out, this is the kind of
preaching that will help
people come to their senses
'today where God is concer
ned. This preaching which
pricked them to their hearts
raised a religious existential
question.
111. Listen to the question
Men and brethren what
shall we do? The question

asked by the young ruler,
asked by Paul on the
Damascus Road, asked by
the Phillipian jailer. It is
still the most important
question of our day. What
must I do to be saved? If
ever a preacher had a great
opportunity Peter has one
now. Because the people
have come face to face with
their sins and they want an
answer to their question.

the promise is unto you and

McCollum sees himself as
