Unemployment rate
drops in Augusta
While the state’s unem
ployment rate remained un
changed at 8.1 per cent
from June to July, the
jobless rate for the Augusta
metro are dropped from
9.2 to 8.9 per cent, Com
missioner of Labor Sam
Caldwell said today.
Joblessness in the metro
Augusta area decreased by
337 over the month, from
12,658 to 12,321. Statewide
joblessness dropped by 115
in a one-month period,
from 217,249 to 217,134.
Employment in the
Augusta area went up by
1,019 from June to July,
from 125,068 to 126,087. In
Georgia employment rose
by 3,110 from June to the
next month, up from
2,367,062 to 2,470,172.
“The good news has been
that we had bottomed out,”
Caldwell said of the state
and nation’s latest
prolonged recession, “but
the bad news was that we
have been staying on the
bottom.
“Now, all that seems to
be changed. We’re looking
up, moving up, but slowly.
Everything in the economy
is tied to interest rates, and
with both the prime rate
and the lending rate for
home buying coming down,
well, it looks like we will
have a walking stick to help
us reach a paved road on
this recovery. It’s been a
longtime.”
The state rate of 8.1 per
cent is for July, latest mon
th for which official figures
are available. This jobless
figure follows an identical
8.1 per cent for Georgia in
June. Caldwell said,
however, that the 8.1 is
“not so bad” when com
pared to 9.8 per cent the
nation recorded for
August—a high rate that
was unchanged from July’s
twin 9.8 per cent.
“And those national
rates are seasonally ad
justed,’’ Caldwell said.
“We have unadjusted
figures in Georgia. But we

Richmond-Academy.
The three services are:

are not happy with an 8.1.
The high unemployment
has taken a heavy toll in this
recession. Just a year ago,
Georgia was standing at 6.3
per cent for its jobless. So it
has been a rather severe
time.”
The total civilian labor
force, the number of per
sons both employed and
unemployed is up in the
metro Augusta area over
the month, from 137,726 to
138,408. And statewide, the
work force is up by 2,995
over the month, from
2,684,311 in June to
2,687,306 in July.
The unemployment rate
is up in both the Augusta
metro area and in the state
over the year. In July of last
year metro Augusta’s rate
was 7.1. The state’s rate last
year was 6.3.
The drop in the jobless
rate in the metro Augusta
area was due largely to in
creased employment ini
wholesale and retail trade,
along with state and local
government.
Counties in the metro
Augusta area and their
jobless rate for July in
clude: Richmond, 7.9, up
from 7.7 in June; Colum
bia, 5.4 unchanged from
the previous month, and
Aiken County, S.C., 12 per
cent, down from 13.1.
The states’s six SMSA’s
(Standard Metropolitan
Statistical Areas) and their
jobless rates for July are:
Albany (50,500 employed,
6,437 unemployed), 11.3 up
from 9.8; Atlanta
(1,043,004 employed,
70,527 unemployed), 6.3
down from 6.6; Augusta
(126,087 employed, 12,321
unemployed), 8.9, down
from 9.2; Columbus
(81,082 employed, 9,015
unemployed), 10 per cent,
down from |1.6; Macon
(103,026 employed, 7,53 C
unemployed), 6.8, up from
6.7; and Savannah (91,572
employed, 7,530 unem
ployed), 7.6, up from 7.5.
