Lester family reunion
Matriarch going strong at 95
At 95 years of age Mrs.
Lucy Lester is not only alert
and well, she is still giving
dramatic poetry recitations
as she did Friday night at
the Lester family reunion at
the Garden Center.
She gave the . welcome
and then favored the family
with one of her strong
voiced expressive poems.
Reading and reciting poetry
has always been one of the
joys of the Lester family
matriarch, who is also the
oldest member of St. Mark
United Methodist Church.
Born in Burke County
Oct. 20, 1887, she has lived
in Augusta for 35 years. She
is the only survivor of the
10 children of Susanna
McCoy Garner and George
Johnson.
She and her husband,
Hurshell, were married in
1905. He diedin 1959. They
had eight children: the late
Joe Evans, Pearl Jones,
James W. Lester, Louise
Watkins, Bessie Houston,
the Rev. Mary B. Littlejohn
and Lucille Scott.
