‘What God has joined
by Bro. R. Williams
The context of this
passage shows that God has
joined husband and wife in
wedlock, and Jesus teaches
that man should not put
them asunder.
Marriage is an institution
of God and not of man. It is
as old as the human race.
When God made the first
man he said it was not good
for man to be alone even in
paradise. Then follosw the
beautiful story of how the
first woman was made and
given unto man. (Gen. 2.)
Jesus said the two are to
oe no more two but one
flesh (Matt. 19:3-9). They
are bound together in
wedlock until separated by
death. No man has a right
to separate them. No court
or judge or lawyer can do it.
No one may contribute any
influence toward their
separation.
When Jesus said, “Let
not man put asunder”
husband and wife, he
means “man” in general,
male or female; just as
when he said, “He that
believeth and is baptized
shall be saved,” he meant
inyone would be saved who
would thus obey.
So let not the husband
put himself and his wife
asunder, and let not the
wife do so. Let not the
father-in-law be guilty of
this awful sin, nor the

One is an enemy of God
who would put asunder
what God joined together;
he is working against God.
Yet there are some who are
so ill-informed as to use
their influence to separate
their own children from
their companions.
Husbands and wives
should be worhty of the
utmost confidence of each
other. A home cannot be
built upon deception and
treachery. About one
fourth of all marriages
today result in divorces,
and only God knows what
percent of the others are
anything but what a home
should be. But God is not
responsible for such
failures.
No home ever failed of
happiness and success when
the Bible was respected and
followed by both parties.
Couples should carry into
marriage a liberal measure
of good common sense and
religion.
They should go into it
determined to follow the
golden rule in which Jesus
said, “All things what
soever ye would that men
should do to you, do ye
even so to them: for this is
the law and the prophets”
(Matt. 7:12). Furthermore,
courtship should continue

discover whether or not

mon to make them happy in
each other’s presence for

Marriage is no miracle
worker. It was never inten
ded to bridge great gulfs
between couples. The
prophet Amos raised the
question: “Can two walk
together, except they be
agreed?” (Amos 3:3).
Couples contemplating
marriage should first be
able to discover in each
other’s lives a common
agreement upon the main
principles and rules of life.
The more such couples
have in common, the hap
pier they are sure to be,
provided that what they
have in common is in the
realm of truth and
righteousness. “Courtship”
suggests the idea of an en
deavor to win affections, to
woo; in courtship a sort of
“court” of inquiry should
be instituted in which the
two seek to learn whether or
not they have enough in

Some have expected too
much of wedlock. They
think of marriage as a sort
of heavenly state in which
the two will cease to be
human, and all will be per

dim the sky. But such is not
the case.
Someone has said love is
a blind thing. Someone else
answered that marriage is
an eye-opener! Those en

Therefore, couples
should carry into marriage
a large measure of toleran

forbearance, and a
forgiving spirit. Many a
home has gone on the rocks
because one or (or both) of
the companions may be too
stubborn to repent and ask
for pardon.
All troubles should be
settled the very day they
arise. CouplesT should
