Rightly dividing the word
by Bro. R. Williams
Let us give a little more
time to this point. If a
thing is taught in the New
Testament and bound upon
us by the apostles as they
taught and preached un
der the great commission,
but not found required in
the Old Testament, we
must obey that which is
required of us whether it
was practiced under the
old covenant or not.
For instance, baptism
and the Lord’s supper are
required of us in the New
Testament. (Mk. 16:16;
Matt. 26:26-28). We must
do these things; yet
Abraham, Moses, and the
prophets back under the
law were not required to
do these things. Fhey will
never be judged by that
part of the Bible under
which we live. Neither will
we be judged by the law
under which they lived.
It does not follow that
because Abel, Noah,
Abraham, and others
could be saved: for we live

But if an item required
in the Old Testament has
been left out of the New

bound upon us by Christ
and the apostles—such as
burning incense, circum

the like—we may not do
these things though they
be found authorized in the
Old Testament. If Christ
and the apostles left such
things back in the old
covenant, we should leave
them back there. We have
no right to bring Judaism
over and splice it on to
Christianity.
Furthermore, those who
go back to the Old
Testament for authority to
practice circumcision, or
anything else found in the
Old but not in the New,
are obligated to practice
all that is commanded in
the old covenant, and not
just what they like back
there.
Paul says, “For I testify

5:3,4).
Therefore, one going
back to the Old Testament
for any item or doctrine
not found in the New
Testament is obligated by
principle to accept, teach,
and practice everything
found in the Old
Testament. Similarly, we
would say of a Jew today
that if he accepts and
practices one thing in the
New Testament not found
in the Old, he would be
obligated as a consistent
man to practice all things
authorized in the New
Testament. I would to
God that people would get
this sound principle of
Bible interpretation and
follow it.
According to Cor. 1:10,
Paul was pleading for
unity. I Cor. 1:10 says,
“Now I beseech you,
brethren by the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ,
that ye all speak the same
thing, and that there be no
divisions among you; but
that ye be perfectly joined
together in the same mind
and in the same
judgment.” Also in John
17:21 Christ is praying for
the unity in the world, for
us all to be one.
John 17:21, 22 says,
“That they all may be
one, as thou, Father, art in
me, and I in thee, that
they also may be one in us:
that the world may believe
that thou hast sent me.

I want to call your at
tention to some false
statements that people are
usine today, especially
some religious leaders.
Such as, “go to the church
of your choice.” There is
no such thing in the Bible,
scripturallv. In Matt.
16:18 Christ says that
“upon this rock I will
build my church and the
gates of hell shall not
prevail against it.”
“My” being a personal
pronoun, meaning that it
is his church and it should
wear Christ’s name and
not John the Baptist, Mar
tin Luther, John Wesley,
or any human’s name.
Also, men teach a
person to go to the mour
ner’s bench and get
religion and that is also a
false statement. According
to James 1:27, “Pure
religion and undefiled
before God and the Father
is tms, to visit the
fatherless and widows in
their affliction, and to
keep himself unspotted
from the world.” And
