With some groups
counting themselves
veterans after 27 months,
Gladys, her brother Bub
ba and cousins Ed and
William have been
singing and surviving
together for 27 years.
Hailing from Atlanta,
the group really had its
beginnings the day
Gladys was born. “We all
came to the hospital to
help bring Gladys
home,” recalls Ed with a
smile. The foursome first
sang together at one of
Bubba’s birthday parties
and from there graduated
to church teas and
various family functions.
Gladys, who remembers
singing her first notes at
age four, became a
professional at seven, af
ter winning the $2,000
grand prize on Ted
Mack’s Original Amateur
Hour.
“Our big number back
then was ‘Canadian Sun
set,” reminisces William.
It was William’s mother,
Mrs. Margaret Guest,
along with Gladys’ Mom,
Elizabeth Knight and
another cousin, James
‘Pip’ Wood, who decided
that the group’s talent
warranted a professional
career.
Using the Wood’s
nickname ‘Pip’ as their
moniker, Gladys Knight
and the Pips were born.
The group’s first single
was released on the Brun
swick label shortly after
the group began touring
in 1958. The song was
called “Whistle My
Love” and was followed
in 1961 by a hit of sub
stantial proportions for
the fledgling vocalists.
“Every Beat of My
Heart” was both an
Rhythm and Blues and
pop success and earned

King. It was an important
step for the group, taking
them out of small clubs
and into larger
auditoriums with bigger
audiences.
“Grapevine” was the
beginning of a string of
Motown hits for Gladys
Knight and the Pips.
They included “Neither
One of Us (Want Good
bye)” Friendship Train”
and “I Don’t Want To
Do Wrong”.
“The Motown period
was when things really
started blossoming for
us,” Ed explains. “We
started playing gigs and
the feeling was real
good.”
After seven years at
Motown, the group
signed with Buddah
Records, and suddenly
witnessed a skyrocketing
in their career that
brought them inter
national recognition and
superstar status.
“Imagination” was their
first substantial winner
on Buddah followed by
the enormously popular
“Midnight Train” and
the equally acclaimed
“You’re The Best Thing
