NAACP plans Black dollar day NEW ORLEANS— NAACP Executive Direc tor Benjamin L. Hooks today launched a “Black Dollar Day” program to drive home to the white business sector across the nation the extent to which their survival depends on money spent by Black consumers. The program is aimed at demonstrating the NAACP’s determination to open up more job and business opportunities for Blacks without resor ting to selective buying tactics or boycotts. On Labor Day weekend, the NAACP will lead Blacks in using only $2 bills and Susan B. An thony dollar coins for purchases of goods and service. “By so doing,” Hooks said, “we will say to merchants that a significant portion of their income is derived from the Black com munity and that we are insisting upon our fair share of the job and en trepreneural oppor tunities which are available.” To test “Black Dollar Day,” as the program is called, delegates atten ding the NAACP 74th Annual Convention in New Orleans exchanged currency for the designated $2 bills and coins at a specially arranged booth. Woman shoots man Police found John Lewis Dent, 540 Highland Ave., in a pool of blood near the front door. Jackie Dent said that she was “sick and tired” of him beating her and that she shot him, accor ding to police reports. He was taken to Talmadge Memorial Hospital and treated for gunshot wounds to the left and right side of the chest and left hand. Ms. Dent was charged with aggravated assault with intent to murder. After being treated at University hospital for shock, she was taken to Georgia Regional Hospital for evaluation. <•_< .». It will be writ ten by the newly formed law firm of Carl C. Brown Jr., Leon Larke and Ellis Ronald Garnett. The law offices are located at 901 Seventh St. Carl C. Brown Jr., is a 1966 honor graduate of the T.W. Josey High School. In 1970, he received the bachelor of arts degree in political science and Christianity from Mercer. In 1973, he received the juris doctor degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer and was admitted to the State of Georgia as an at torney and counselor at law. Presently he is engaged in the general practice of law. In 1982 he was appoin ted judge of the Recor der’s Court for the City of Augusta. This new program will enable the business per son to obtain information and referrals at a con venient local site on small business assistance, SBA publications, SCORE/ACE free counseling, Small Business Development Center (SBDC) services, SBA loans, procurement assistance, and management training programs.
