SEEP students told merger of Tate schools harmful to Blacks Dr. Carl Gordon, a medical doc tor and owner of WTSG TV in Albany, said that many disadvant aged students will never get the chance to get a college degree if Black state schools are merged with nearby white schools as pro posed by Gov. Jpe Frank Harris. Gordon spoke at the Student Educaional Enrichment Program (SEEP) banquet at the Medical College of Georgia Friday night. SEEP tries to attract more minorities and other under represented groups into the health sciences. A former army chief of surgery, Gordon is also a former professor at Albany State College, Lincoln University and the University of Colorado. In 1979, he served on a study committee considering the merger of Albany State and Albany Junior College. “Most Albany State students start up out more slowly than their white counterparts at Albany Junior College, but catch up before graduating,” said the for mer U.S. Army lieutenant colonel. So you see, the notion of a Black presidential candidate is much more than simply a “run for the roses,” and is in fact the demonstration of a new level of political sophistication, for which the time is precisely right. He also dismissed the idea that the merger would save money. “We’ll let our own people suffer and hand out billions abroad,” he countered. He said that Albany State should be an “A-l college whether or not white students come, as long as there is no law prohibiting them from coming.” He said that while he was on the merger study committee he made a motion to enhance Albany State to the tune of $37 million. “Blacks need any education they can get at any level they can get it,” he concluded.
