Herpes: Is there hope?
Although herpes
viruses have been around
for at least 2,000 years,
the 1980 s is being heralded
as the Age of Herpes as the
Disease reaches epidemic
proportions.
There is no known cure
and even its control is dif
ficult. But the proponents
of two differing and con
troversial treatments are
claiming limited success.
The national documen
tary series Tony Brown’s
Journal examines this
menacing disease in a
two-part series, “Herpes:
Is There Hope?”
Part I looks at the her
pes simplex virus and
popular methods of
treatment and responds
to the charge that herpes
exists on a large scale
among Blacks.
Tony Brown’s Journal
is the nation’s longest
running, Black-Affairs
television series and has

Between 50 and 150
million people in this
country are infected with
Herpes simplex I, which
usually appears as cold
sores or fever blisters
around the mouth.
It is estimated that 20
million Americans suffer
from Herpes Simplex 11,
the veneral type. Genital
herpes is now the second
most common venereal
disease in the country and
is spreading so rapidly
that there are 500,000
new cases each year, with
an astonishing 35 percent
of the U.S. population
being exposed at some
time. Herpes is now
blamed for an increasing
number of diseases, in
cluding cancer.

As to the first category
mentioned above, a fin
ding of “disability” does
not always prove to be an
easy task. The word
k “disability” is defined by
I the Social Security Act as
I an “inability to engage in
F any substantial gainful
activity by reason of a
medically determinable
physical and or mental
impairment which is ex
pected to last for a con
tinous period of 12 mon
ths or result in death.”
The definition also in
cludes a consideration of
the individual’s age,
education and work ex
perience. In addition, the
courts have interpreted
the phrase “substantial
gainful activity” to mean
meaningful work which
allows one to utilize im
portant physical or men
tal activities.
Therefore, in light of
the definition of
“disability,” the ap
plicant’s medical records
become highly important.
There must be a medical
basis for the individual’s
inability to work. If no
medical basis is found,
benefits will be denied.
If a person is denied
benefits but believes he or
she is disable, he or she
has the options of asking
the Social Security Ad
ministration to reconsider
the decision. If upon
reconsideration benefits
are still denied, the ap
plicant must request a
hearing within 60 days.
