BUILDING VOTER STRENGTH Benjamin L. Hooks, center,
executive director of the NAACP leads the NAACP Overground
Railroad March from Covington, Ky. through Ohio to Detroit.
The 360-mile march is part of the NAACP’s national campaign to
register more than a million new voters.
The march follows one of the Underground Railroad routes taken
by Black slaves in the 1800 s in their quest for freedom. The NAACP
registered more than 800,000 new voters last year.
With Hooks are (from left to right) Georgia State Sen. Julian Bond;
Joseph Madison, NAACP director of voter education; Marion Spen
cer, former NAACP Cincinnati branch president, and John Johnson,
NAACP Kentucky State Conference president. The march ended in
Detroit on September 4.

iwrence Cumberbatch had a dream.
And he beat the odds to achieve it.
His dream didn't start with a
professional goal. It started with a
commitment, a commitment to social
change and civil rights. He’d seen enough
growing up to know something had to be
done. So he followed another man with
a dream to Washington in 1963. And
helped get out the votes in Mississippi
in 1965.
By the time he entered law school
in 1968, other people had taken their
dreams to the streets. Lawrence

Change the System from within. To get
the power, he felt, you had to work for it.
Today, he's a David in the world of

And he has.

Herpes: Is there hope?
Part II
Herpes has emerged as
the “VD of the Ivy
League.” But that may
be changing.
A study among its vic
tims indicate that 95 per
cent of herpes sufferer are
Caucasian; 51 percent are
women; 80 percent are
between 20-39 years of
age; 53 percent are
college graduates and 56
percent are in the $20,000
or more income bracket.
However, the medical
profession is finding
more primary cases in the
urban Black ghetto.
The sudden upsurge
and incurability of herpes
has led to a nationwide
panic.
The national documen
tary series Tony Brown
Journal examines this
baffling disease in a two
part series, “Herpes: Is
There Hope?” Part I of
the series focused on the
herpes simplex virus and
popular methods of
treatment, including
lysine, and amino acid.
Part II continues with
the growing presence of
the disease in every sector
of the American
population and an
examination of an unor
thodox treatment
methos, utilizing BHT.
BHT (Butylated
Hydroxytoluene) is a
powerful and effective
antioxidant commonly
used in foods.
Recent studies indicate
that BHT may inhibit
herpes viruses. Although
some have expressed con
cern over the commercial
use of BHT as a food
preservative, authors of
the best-selling nutrition
book Life Extension
(Warner Books),
physicist Durk Pearson
and chemist Sandy Shaw,
claim that is the most
effective treatment for
herpes.
Televised on public
television (PBS), the
series can be seen in this
area on WCES-20 at 5
p.m., Sept. 11.
“The herpes virus dif
fers from a tot of other

This is the way it

Ms. Shaw on th
program.
She advises that BH r
can overcome thi
situation. “The BHT
dissolves into this fatv
coat and it alters th<
chemical structure of th<
coat as that it no longer ii
able to stay tightly coilec
around the virus.
It springs open anc
there’s the naked virus
underneath. The protein
and the nucleic acids are
exposed to the immune
system without that coat
around it to disguise it.
After that, the immune
system sees it and attacks
it and destroys it.”
Pearson responds to
the popular use of the
amino acid lysine to con
trol herpes outbreaks:
“With BHT, you’re
strenghtening your im
mune system, rather than
weaking it (with lysine).
At the same time, you’re
destroying the viruses.
Remember, lysine will
not desijroy herpes
viruses, it* merely slows
their reproduction,
whereas BHT actually
kills them dead.”
