Black Americans are indispensable to the
American economy and body politic. We
spend over $l4O billion a year on
consumer goods and services, pay S3O
million a month in union dues, contribute
millions more to pension funds, and pay
billions in taxes. Yet our dollars are not
reinvested in our community for our
economic development.
Using our dollars to fight
for dollars.
The Democrats may stand for welfare and
the Republicans for workfare but who
stands for OUR SHARE? Corporate
America is using social generosity to
appease us, when we need economic
reciprocity to develop us.
We must renegotiate our economic
relationship with corporate America. We,
as Black people an occupied people in
exile —must fight for economic territorial
integrity. Corporate America has moved
its buildings to the suburbs but its
business remains in our community. We
must vote for dignity everyday with our
dollars. Only if we resist and demand our

Personal financial planning
by Charles F. Smith
Thanks to inflation,
double-digit interest rates
and the emergence of the
two-income family, many
people today find them
selves faced with finan
cial decisions previously
limited to the very
wealthy.
For many people,
financial planning is a
professional service that
can better equip them to
face those decisions.
In many way, personal
financial planning works
like an architect’s
blueprint. Most people
are ill-equipped to design
their on home so they,
hire an architect for a fee.
Before starting the
design, the architect first
consults with you to find
out what you desire in a
home and what you want
to spend. From this in
formation, the architect
can produce the blueprint
that will be used to build
your structure.
Financial planning
works much the same
way. First, a financial in-
ventory is taken to help
measure the value of your
present assets and deter
mine goals in the order of
your priorities.
With this information,
and with the help of a
computer, a financial
plan can be the blueprint
that helps you chart a
course of action to
achieve financial goals
and apply your resources
more effectively.
A financial plan, for
example, can help project
Social Security, civil ser
vice or retirement,
disability and survivor
benefits. This type of
projection into the future
can be beneficial to you
in identifying potential
unfilled needs, as well as
suggesting alternate in
come sources.
Your financial plan
will also illustrate your
estate situation, and will
help you structure your
lifetime accumulations to
reduce estate tax
obligations and avoid
losses in the transfer of
your estate to your sur
vivors.
Another feature your
financial plan should
provide is an income, ex
pense and net worth
