Your financial future
About annuities
by Charles F. Smith
Women have more
financial responsibilities
and oppor
tunities to
day than IKE Wl
ever before.
They num
ber 43 per
cent of the
work force
with in- Bk ■
coma total- Bi
ling $390 billion an
nually.
With these new oppor
tunities have come a
number of financial
problems. Housing prices
have risen dramatically
since 1970, making it dif
ficult for many women to
purchase housing.
Uncertainties over the
solvency of the Social
Security system have
caused many people to
begin thinking of their
own retirement plans
utilizing Individuals
Retirements Accounts
(IRAs) and Keogh ac
counts.
Many women find
themselves with a sudden
case of “bracket creep.”
Bracket creep is what
happens when a woman is
pushed into a higher tax
bracket because of an in
crease in salary. Seeing
that nice raise disappear
into taxa is a common
disappointment among
women today. Yet,
married women have ad
ditional financial
decisions. Should they
keep joint or separate
bank accounts with their
husbands? The same
question needs to be
asked of other assets such
as property and
securitia.
Financial management
shouldn’t be left for a few
hours on a rainy after
noon or for April 15 in a
flurry of tax concerns.
Time should be set aside
so that a personal plan
can be developed to cover
every aspect of your
money management.
Begin by taking a few
simple steps. Determine
your assets and liabilitia.
Assets include things like
all cash, personal proper
ty and real atate. From
these subtract liabilitia
such as money owned,
credit card debts, mor
tgages, installment loans
and taxa. This
establisha your net wor
th.
Then set up a system
for keeping track of all
income and expenses.
Careful and up-to-date
records are very impor
tant to overall success.
Now devise a plan. Be
sure this prepara you for
basic contingencia, par
ticularly financial protec
tion from death or
disability of a spouse,
personal disability,
building a nat-egg,
reducing taxa and
preparing for retirement
and children (note that
tuition costs have also
risen 122 percent in the
last 10 years.)
With these steps com
pleted, you will have
taken a big step towards
making the most of your
new opportunitia. These
' can be turbulent tima for
interat rata, inflation,
invatments and changing
government regulations.
A financial plan can be
your most effective tool
in atablishing an edge
over these area.
