score came only 14

contest with only three in- '

scoring with 8:21

Advice to supporters
This writer was sad
dened upon learning the
reasons why Coach David
Dupree decided to ter
minate such an illustrious
career as head coach of
the Lucy Laney Wildcats.
A man of his statue in
high school football
should have been able to
make a decision to step
down based on his own
personal beliefs. Instead,
Coach Dupree called it
quits because of
harassment to him, his
family and his players.
However, enough has
been said about the mat
ter; why beat a dead hor
se?
Still, I am appalled at
the attitudes of some high
school athletic suppor
ters. It seems as though
some of us have forgotten
the real purpose of high
school athletics.
It is my opinion that
football, basketball,
baseball and other sports
activities in high school
are there to give our
young men and women a
chance to compete, learn
the lessons of good spor
tsmanship, and provide
an outlet for those who
wish to participate, be it
playing or in the stands
cheering.
Instead, we have
placed high school sports
on a pseudo plane, expec-
capricious nature of the
decisions emanating from
the White House are a
direct threat to world
peace and human sur
vival.
The debacle in
Grenada has been sorely
criticized by every
rational minded nation,
including Great Britain
ting our boys to become
men and our coaches to
win every game. No
coach or player should be
subjected to that kind of
abuse. I wonder how
many of these “empty
wagons” have lead the
charge for academic suc
cess of the many young
minds in the classroom.
Somewhere along the
way many of us have lost
sight of our priorities.
Our top priority should
be making sure that the
relationship between
coaches and players is a
wholesome one, and that
the welfare of our
children is in good hands.
The school system and
coaches have proved that
over and over again.
I hope that no other
coach has to go
through what David
Dupree went through,
especially one of such
greatness. “Advice is
seldom welcome and
those who want it the
most always like it the
least.”
This week-end will
mark the beginning of the
high school play-offs. On
Friday night Westside (9-
1) will square off against
Laney (4-5-1); Glenn
Hills (10-0) will host
Josey (4-6). On Saturday
Richmond (4-5-1) will
tackle Evans (7-3).
and France. The kind of
reckless abandon which
has permeated our
foreign policy is
suggestive of an un
bridled craving for
power. The nation cannot
withstand the
proliferation of similar
events without destroying
the fabric of the republic.
