Medicare, medicaid workshop offered
The rising cost of
health care for the elderly
is the theme of the
Medicare and Medicaid
Crisis Workshop being
sponsored by the Senior
Citizens Council of
7
Greater Augusta and the
CSRA Dec. 6, 9 a.m. to 3
p.m., at St. John
Methodist Church.
Representatives from
the Atlanta branch of the
Health Care Financing
Administration (HCFA)
will be discussing in detail
medicare, medicaid and
supplemental health in
surance.
The Housing Select
Committee on Aging
heard testimony recently
that, because of the in-
creasing cost to recipients
of benefits provided by
medicare and medicaid,
the elderly now spend
about 20 percent of their
income on health care, or
about the same as they
did before the medicare
and medicaid programs
were enacted! This
estimate includes the
cost of supplemental
health insurance needed
to cover the “medigap.”
The addition, hospital
costs of medicare are
projected to increase
about 13 percent a year
through the 1980’s. Thus,
it is difficult to see how
personal costs to
medicare beneficiaries
will decrease or services
to them increase during
this period.
For more information
on the workshop, contact
Phyllis Smith at 404-724-
0729, The Senior Citizens
Council.
