Brown’s Jornal.
During the February,
1984 anniversary of the
celebration of the African
experience, started by the
great historican Dr. Car
ter Woodson in 1926, the
much acclaimed
television series relives
the 75-year march for
freedom of the nation’s
oldest and largest civil
rights organization—the
National Association for
the Advancement of
Colored People.
This docudrama will be
seen on the nation’s
public television stations
(PBS). Tony Brown’s
Journal, America’s
longest running and top
ranked Black-affairs
television series, has been
sponsored by Pepsi-Cola
Company for nine con
secutive years. It will be
seen in this area on
WCES-Channel 20 at
7:30 p.m. on Feb. 7.
To present the extraor
dinary history of the
NAACP, “The Longest
Struggle” intertwines
dramatic re-enactments
of historic figures with
rare documents,
photographs, film and in
terviews.
History Month docudrama on TONY BROWN,S
JOURNAL, as she leads the television re-enactment of
the NAACP’s 75 year March for justice.
Because of the scarcity
of film footage, since
Black positive experien
ces were rarely recorded,
historic figures such as
James Weldon Johnson,
W.E.B. Dußois and Ida
B. Wells-Barnett will be
recreated and portrayed
by seasoned actors.
In this docudrama, the
role of Ida B. Wells-
Barnett, a founding
member of the NAACP,
crusading newspaper
publisher and one of the
most outstanding figures
in the fight against lyn
ching, is played by
Michele Shay, widely
known as Henrietta in the
daytime television drama
“Another World.”
Tony Brown’s Journal
has combed the archives
and uncovered a rare
film, produced by the
NAACP in the early
1930 s on school
discrimination. The
NAACP also granted
special permission to use
its private archives, so the
series will showcase
documents and
photographs rarely seen
in modern times.
“The Longest
Struggle” will also
feature an original recor
