While the organization

plans are being completed

of the month with a Black
History activity at the
Wallace Branch Library.
The chapter goals of
the Links are to promote

the lives of members and
the community.

It has been sveral mon
ths now since the first of
three Richmond County
high school football
coaches announced his
retirement from the
sport. First, it was coach
David Dupree of Laney,
then Tommy Way of
Richmond and the most
recent being Coley
Cassidy of Westside.
All three had very
respectable programs at
three well-respected
schools in Georgia high
school football. Being
good coaches from three
schools with excellent
programs, why the sud
den retirements?
All three reported per
sonal reasons for
resigning. Ironically, it
happened to be the same
year when some head
coaches were moved from
their schools to other
schools to teach, but the
word we get from the
coaches is that this had
nothing to do with their
decisions.
This reporter has been
trying to get a lead on
replacements for next
year. No decision has
been made, although
there have been plenty of
applicants for the jobs.
Several names have been
floating around, but I
won’t call any to get

Officers for the 1983-
hopes up or diminish the
dreams of others.
However, there is one
good thing to come out of
all of this. The Board of
Education has announced
that all head football and
basketball coaches will
remain at their schools
for the next school year.
That, my friends, is
great news.
Coaches need to be
around their players on
and off the field or court.
Many of our young men
need that kind of guidan
ce and a coach can’t
provide that only at prac
tice.
Whoever gets the jobs
will have some big shoes
to fill because these three
schools have built a
tradition around win
ning.
