Lady Wildcats ’ turnaround
When coach Otis
Smart took over the Lucy
C. Laney Lady Wildcats
this year, he knew he had
a difficult task before
him.
The lady Wildcats had
won only five games the
previous year, and the
desire to win had dwin
dled tremendously. But
Coach Smart saw the
potential and went right
to work to develop it.
With 11 returnees and
three freshmen signing
on, he has built a cham
pion practically over
night. This year the team
has amassed a 17-3 record
with two of the defeats
coming at the hands of
the powerful
Orangeburg-Wilkerson
team of South Carolina.
The lady Wildcats are
9-0 in the region and have
clinched first place. This
has been the best season
for the team since 1977.
Coach Smart attributes
the team’s success this
year to hard work,
discipline and a close-knit
group Os young ladies
who are unselfish on the
court and really care
about each other. Coach
Smart stated that the girls
“double-dipping” con
troversy), “I don’t have
to tell anybody where I’ve
worked!” Right??....Ri
i-i-g-ht!! Know what
y’mean, Brother!
Meanwhile “WHITE
DOG” is on the leash out
back behind the barn,
again. ..and YOU think
if*
gw
have done well in class,
on the court and have had
good attendance in
school.
This year’s attack has
been led by floor leader
Janice Wilkerson. The
other starters are: Lisa
Walton, Tammy Wright,
Connie Lloyd and
Frankie Boynton.
However, the coach is
quick to point out that
winning this year has
been a total team effort.
Every player on the team
has at one time or
another come through
when needed.
Defense has also been a
very important part of
the team’s success. Ac
cording to Smart, “A
coach can’t be a good
coach unless the players
perform. This team was
ready to learn, and that’s
just what they went out
and did.”
The players feel their
coach is the “best.” He’s
hard working and they
love him for it. I think
Cynthia Walker put it
best when she said,
“Coach puts our minds
on the game and made us
want to play and want to
win.”
YOU just might never see
it, right huh?...WRONG!
Don’t be surprised if it
pops up in your neigh
borhood theatre any day
ow.
