Did you know that
there’s a war going on
right here in the United
States.
It’s not one of those
conventional wars where
guns and bullets are used,
or human lives are lost.
Oh no! The stakes are
much higher; this war is
being fought with money.
It seems as though the
United States Football
League has launched an
all out attack on the
National Football
League.
How dare this young
up-start to challenge the
big, strong grandaddy of
them all. But that’s just
what the USFL is doing.
First, it was Hershel
Walker. The USFL spent
a week-end with Hershel
and now Hershel is spen
ding a lot of time with
them to the tune of
around $6 million
dollars.
Fans and the NFL were
shocked when they heard
the news. Though some
won’t admit it, I think we
were more shocked at the
money they paid than
Hershel Walker passing
up on his senior year of
eligibility.
Last year also saw
some other key players,
that would have been
drafted high in the NFL,
go to the USFL.
The NFL tried to give
us the impression that
they weren’t worried.
They were through their
season and had one of the
greatest Super Bowl
games in history.
This would for sure
dampen the spirits of the
new league and any
players who thought the
National Football League
was still not as powerful
as it has always been.
The USFL opened its
second season with atten
dance down from last
season’s opening
weekend, but their spirits
had not abated.
First, there was Marcus
Dupree and another $6
million dollar contract,
but that was peanuts
compared to what was
about to follow.
The Los Angeles Ex
press of the USFL signed
quaterback Steve Young
of Brigham Young
University to a whopping
S4O million contract.
Wait! Don’t blow your
stack. The life of this
contract is reported to
last until 2027. So it’s
roughly about a $1
million a year.
The point is the league
has attempted to make
this kind of commitment
to its players. I wonder
where it’s going to stop?
Is there an end in sight? Is
the NFL going to take
this lying down?
Well, time will tell. But
remember, this is a war
and the ammunition is
money!
