DeVaney seeks mayor’s post
Auguste Mayor Pro Tern Charles
Devany—who three months ago
became the caretaker of a broker
administration—today announced
he wants to continue serving in the
city’s highest elected office.
The Ist Ward City Council
representative tossed his running
shoes into the political ring the
moring at 10 a.m., bringing to an
end the speculation as th whether
or not he would run.
Prior to DeVaney’s announ
cement at a morning news con
ference, the only announced can
didate for the October mayoral
election has been Inez Wylds, the
other Ist Ward member of City
Council.
DeVaney the was selected by the
City Council on May 4 to serve as
the city’s acting mayor until the
end of 1984 and complete the term
of resigned Mayor Edward Mcln
tyre.
Mclntyre had planned to seek
re-election this October, but those
plans were ended when he was
convicted in U.S. District Court of
extortion—using his office for
private gain.
Although DeVaney’s announ
cement came as no surprise to most
political observers, DeVaney him

Muhammad Ali
hits Farrakhan
WASHINGTON Former
boxing champ Muhammad Ali, a
Muslim, has repudiated comments
about Jews by Nation of Islam
leader Louis Farrakhan, saying it
was a media “trick” to promote the
views of someone not speaking for
all Muslims.
Ali and Imam Warith Muham
mad, the spiritual leader of more
than 1 million Muslims, called a
news conference in Washington to
disavow Farrakhan’s antisemitic
comments, which have caused a
public furor in recent months.
“I’m not with Farrakhan, none
of these people are with
Farrakhan,” Ali said, gesturing to
a crowd gathered at the historic
home of Frederick Douglass.
Ali said it was a “press-media
trick” to promote Farrakhan, and
to confuse non-muslims that it was
a“typical muslim belief. ’ ’ .
“You want the people to believe
that his beliefs about Jews and
other things is our belief,” Ali
said. “You want the masses of the
people who are going to convert
one day to think that this is a
Muslim, one that’s radical, one
that’s not Godly, one that’s not
Islam.”
“So you get someone like
Farrakhan, who made a statement
about Jews which you know is
terrible, and you want people to
say Black Muslim, Ali said a
mocking tone.
Muhammad, son of Elijah
Muhammad, who founded the
Nation of Islam, also chastised
presidential candidate Jesse
Jackson for his early association
with Farrakhan. Jackson
repudiated Farrakhan’s statement
about Jews.
When asked what was wrong
with Jackson’s association with
Farrakhan, Muhammad said,
“how would you like me to sit
down with Hitler if he was alive? It
represents the sake kind of thing
that Hitler taught. I think I’m bet
ter able to say what he (Farrakhan)
represents than anybody here.”
Muhammad, leader of the
American Muslim Mission, broke

in the early days of his temporary
mavoral service.
“Initally, I had not made up my
mind, quite frankly,” DeVaney
said. “When you get a good recep
tion to your work and feel like
people are approving of what you
do, then the decision becomes
more clear.”
He continued, “The fact I
haven’t had any announced op
position other than Inez Wylds is
something short of miraculous. I
felt, once Mclntyre’s situation was
resolved, the door would be wide
open. I’m not tryin to encourage
anyone else to run, believe me.”
The qualifying period for the
mayor’s race opens at 9 a.m. on
Aug 20 and closes at 5 p.m. on
Sept 17.
DeVaney expects competition
with Mrs. Wylds to be kept on a
good level win no mud slinging.
“We’ve been friends for a long
time, and I certanly plan on the
campaign staying that way,”
DeVaney remarked.
The mayor pro tempore was
asked if he was surprised there
have been fairly few floor fights on
City Council since he took over the
gavel from Mayor Mclntyre.
“Honestly, I did believe that

The Rev. F.D. Reese, who led
many of those marches whith the
late Dr. Martin Lurther King. Jr.
and other SCLC leaders was
defeated by incumbent white
Mayor Joe Smitherman who
received 20 percent of the Black
vote according to some analysts.
Raymond Majors, a member of
city council and local SCLC
president led the balloting for city
council president and faces a white
opponent in a July 31 runoff.
Lowery was informed that
police officers were stationed at
polling places in Black neigh

white communities. Qualified

father’s death in 1975. The
Amercian Muslim Mission follows
the teacnings of Islam although
Farrakhan’s group retained the
name, Nation of Islam.
Farrakhan first gained national
notoriety when he threatened a
Washington Post reporter for
reporting a remark by Jackson
criticized as anit-semitic.
