Sidney Poitier
continues to mine gold
JUST FOR THE RECORD-
Oscar winning actor SIDNEY
POITIER, who continues to mine
gold in the rich vein of Black
Hollywood screen workers, has
Another heavy lineup working on
Columbia’s new dance musical
“Fast Forward” (formerly
“Shootout”).
The crew is topped by
CANDACE ALLEN, the bright
Radcliff grad, who is first assistant
director-the first Black woman to
hold the slot on a major flick for a
major studio.
And there are 20 more: Produc
tion accountant MARGARET
MITCHELL, a Colpix vet who
handles the money; JILL
FREEMAN, script supervisor;
SID BALDWIN and 808
FLFTCHER, still photographers;

Jayne Kennedy
RICHARD WESLEY, screen
writer; WINNIE BROWN and
VIOLETTE JONES, costumes;
JIMMIE HERRON and CAREY
HARRIS, propmasters; EDDIE
SMITH, stunt coordinator:
BERNADINE ANDERSON,
makeup; LEONARD DRAKE,
hair stylist; SCOTT PIERSON,
transportation coordinator; A.
SHAMBLEY, craft service;
MICKI MCMILLAN, secretary;
PAM POITIER, dance assistant,
and CEDRIC SCOTT, director’s
assistant
Plus BOBBIE ROYAL, JAMES
JACKSON and camera operator,
LEROY PATTON in New York.
Asked why he does it when others
who might don’t, POITIER’S suc
cinct reply was: “Why not?”
MOVING RIGHT ALONG--
Revival of an old Poitier classic,
“The Defiant Ones,” is on the
ABC-TV Movie of the Week
Schedule, with Carl Weathers(who
whipped Sylvester Stallone in
“Rocky”) and Robert Urich in the
roles that got Tony Curtis and
Poitier Oscar nominations in
1958... Rae Dawn Chong will be
starring in a new John Badham
flick for Warner Bros, entitled
“American Flyer.”
Co-starring will be Robert

PROGRESS REPORT -
Named Director of Publicity and
Promotion for Paramount Pic
tures out West here is Cheryl
Boone Isaacs, formerly with the
Ladd Co. as director of advertising
and publicity. She’s kin to Ashley
Boone, prexy of Distribution and
Marketing at Columbia.
Incident ally, the ladies of the
film ad-pub world are heading up
the ballyhoo departments of just
about every studio around these
days, in case you hadn’t
noticed.. Jayne Kennedy is dating
Bill Overton, a local columnist
reports, in case you hadn’t
noticed... Brooke Shields is dating
some dude from Princeton while
Michael Jackson is outmaking all
that money, in case he hasn’t
noticed...AND it’s been hinted
that little Gary Coleman’s white
“sister,” Dana Plato, on the
“Diff’rent Strokes” TV show is
going to be sent off to boarding
school in Europe the taller Gary’s
brother Todd Bridges gets, etc./
etc., in case you hadn’t noticed.
NOW, HEAR THIS:—To clear
the air and so forth, a very impor
tant trade paper columnist has
corrected some prior inferential
reporting to cop out that actress
Cicely Tyson, who is suing
producers of the defunct Broad
way play “The Corn Is Green”
was not guilty of “unprofessional
behavior” for which she was
dismissed, and that CICELY has
been cleared ofany such conduct
by a grievance committee of Ac
tors Equity.
Elizabeth Taylor is named in the
$625,000 law suit as co-producer
of the show. Seems Cicely went
down to Fisk University to be with
her husband, MILES DAVIS,
when he received an honorary

Cicely Tyson
degree. She had the producer’s
permission. There was a travel
mixup and she missed ONE curtain
call; not FOUR, as the trade paper
said. So the likelihood is the next
“green” that’s seen will not be
corn.
Meanwhile, some quotable
quotes from the house of TYSON
and DAVIS: Cicely on how she
and Miles met: “I picked him up
in a pickup truck and stole his
heart away.” Miles on Michael
Jackson: “He hasn’t found his life
style yet.”
WRITE-ON: Charles Fuller
who wrote the stage drama “A
Soldier’s Plat” and got a Pulitzer
Prize for his labors, also wrote the
screen version “A Soldier’s
Story,” which is scheduled to be
released by Columbia Pictures in
September. Fuller a quiet,
unassuming type is busy working
on other projects now that
“SOLDIER’S” is completed. The
second Black playwright to win the
coverted prize for drama since
Chai les Gordone won it in 1970
for “No Place to be Somebody,”
he does not easily rest on his Pulit
zer! “My winning is nice and
wonderful; I am very glad about it.
But my concerns are to see more
realistic things done in the
theater, movies and television -
to see more of our people the way
we are. If the Pultizer provides us
with away to do that, then thank
God I won it.” Amen...
