It 9 s that time again
Well, it’s that time of year again
when the old pigskin is taken off
the shelf and placed into the arena
of war games.
For many of us it will fill our
weekends with long anticipated
dreams of our favorite teams rising
to the top. For sure, football is a
game that has taken most
American men by the nose and led
us into the relms of total frenzy.
For many of us the season will
mean heartbreak, joy, excitement,
madness, hatred, love, etc., for
this sport can bring out the best or
the worst in any fan.
Again, I want to remind our
high school fans to remember that
the sport is provided and played by
the kids. We as adults must always
be mindful of our responsibility to
our young people.
Each week we are going to
present a game of the week. We
hope you stay with us, as we ride
out the season hoping that a school
in Richmond County is finally
crowned champion.
Our game of the week this week
is Laney vs. Richmond Academy
at the ARC stadium
Both teams have new coaches
with different philosophies about
how the game should be played as
compared to how it was played
before they arrived. That means
that both teams had to learn new
systems.
I rate this game a toss-up, but I
must give the edge to Richmond by
a touchdown.

Ode To A Legend
Nestled on Laney-Walker there’s a place
That’s familiar as a mother’s smiling face.
It has been a place of refuge through the years
It has witnessed happiness, sorrow and tears.
It has seen many, many people come and go
On its sidewalks life has passed to and fro.
But there is one constant that has always remained
For this special place he was surely ordained.
He is stalwart as the tallest Georgia Pine,
As caring as the winemaker is to his vine.
Many lives have been enriched by this man
Whose dedication has touched both player and fan.
Coaching his boys is a task he loves to do
The only thing he likes better
When the sidelines no longer feel his pacing feet,
And the officials no longer feel his special heat
There will be a void that the eye can readily see.
But his determined spirit will surely span eternity.
Great men’s lives sometimes must undergo a change.
Circumstance has a tendency to come in and rearrange.
But the good done becomes immortal in a mortal world
And it will continue to live, to grow, to unfurl.
So at Lucy Laney High in the year 2083
They’ll still be singing praises to David Dupree.

Professional scouts watching
Paine’s Howard Richardson
Paine College baseball star
Howard Richardson reported to
school without the nearly $2,000
he needed to settle his account in
the business office. Had he not
been able to enroll he might have
also forfeited a professional
baseball career.
Entering his senior year, he is
being scouted by the Pittsburgh
Pirates, the Los Angeles Didgers
have also shown an interest in the
fleet centerfielder who averaged
2.5 stolen bases per game last year
while batting .325 and striking out
only 5 times in 19 times at bat.
Richardson was to have atten
ded the Pirates tryout camp this
summer, according to baseball
coach Dennis Wilcox, but a job
assignment took him out of town.
When he returned it was too late.
However, Wilcox said that the
Pirates didn’t know that he still
had a year left in school and they
will have their scouts to monitor
him locally.
Richardson is not only an out
standing centerfielder, he is the
team’s best pitcher. Last year he
beat Georgia College, was ranked
number six in the nation at the
time.
Richardson is a versatile athlete.
Though only 5’ 11” he is co-captain
of Paine’s basketball team and an
excellent tennis player.
He spent his freshman vear at
