Confronting contemporary issues
by Bro. R. Williams
The central theological question
related to the problem of abortion
z *is whether the unborn fetus is a
living person with full rights of
life.
There are at least five views:
Human life begins (1) at the
moment of conception, (2) when
life or “quickening” is felt by the
mother, (3) when the fetus could
survive outside the mother’s
womb—about seven months, (4) at,
birth, and (5) sometime after birth.
Numerous penetrating questions
are let loose on this subject. Is a
non-viable fetus more valuable
than the other children who
demand a mother’s attention?
Is termination of a pregnancy
preferable to bringing a child into
what has little chance of a happy
life? Is it even fair to compel it to
stay nine months in the womb of a
mother who can communicate to it
even there that she wished it were
dead?
Do we have the right to force a
woman who has gone through the
horrible experience of being raped
to bear in her body for nine mon-

HRC

subpoena ordinance was scheduled
to go before the county com
mission for adoption, but later
discovered that chamber members
had slated a meeting for later in the
month of September.
Thomas said he did not know
the exact date of the chamber
meeting, but that “it will take
place before the ordinance comes
up before the county commission’s
next meeting.” The county com
mission will meet again on Sept.
18.
Thomas said the chamber
meeting would not affect HRC’s
pursuit of the subpoena ordinance,
adding that he has been working
on the document for two years.
“If they (chamber of commerce)
do not agree with it, we’ll go with
it anyway.
“There’s been a lot of confusion
because of newspaper articles
saying we (HRC) wanted subpoena
power. What the ordinance ac
tually does is ask the county com
mission to use the power it already
has by state law to back us up. The
wording of the ordinance makes
the law enforceable,” stated
Thomas.
Thomas said under the terms of
the ordinance, HRC would be able
go to the county commission to
gain access to documents trom
“about one-third of the em
ployment cases where employers
do not respond.”

ths a growing reminder of that
horror? Is the fetus a blob of
tissue?
These are interesting questions,
but let us get down to the number
one question—ls the unborn fetus
a living person with full rights of
life. Let us check out the Bible
concerning this question. David
did not think of humanity as tied
to the moment of birth; listen to
his own words:
For thou has possessed my
reins: thou has covered me in
my mother’s womb.
I will praise thee; for I am
feardully and wonderfully
made: marvellous are thy
works; and that my soul
knoweth right well.
My substance was not hid
from thee, when I was made in
secret, and curiously wrought in
the lowest parts of the earth
(Psalm 139:13-15).
Job gives more evidence
about life in the womb:
Did not he that made me in
the womb make him? And did
not one fashion us in the
womb& (Job 31:15).

Dr. Luke informs us that
John the Baptist leaped in his
mother’s womb: And"it came to
pass, that, when Elisabeth
heard the salutation of Mary,
the babe leaped in her womb;
and Elisabeth was filled with the
Holy Ghost: (Luke 1:41).
These passages indicate that life
begins in the womb and not at bir
th. If there is no life there, what is
everyone so concerned about
destroying.
Life is a gift from God. Paul
says, “He giveth life and breath to
all things” (Acts 17:25).
Ringing throughout the Bible is
the divine injunction, “Thou shalt
not kill”( Romans 13:9). Irrespon
sible pregnancies will increase
when there is no respect for human
life. It is stated that 70 percent of
mothers.
Unmarried couples selfishly in
dulge in sexual pleasure and then
when pregnancy occurs they want
to destroy that life that would
cause them embarrassment of
some limitations. The same is true
of some married profesional
the celebration.

all who have abortions are unwed
women who choose to abort.
Christian women should not
have an abortion for any reason
except the woman’s life or health is
endangered which makes this a
medical decision by qualified
physicians.
We must teach people what God
has to say concerning the matter.
We must teach young people and
adults to honor the principles of
sexual morality as taught by Jesus.
Virtuous young people and adults
who abstain from sex until
marriage are never faced with the
decision about abortion. God’s
way is the best way. We must stay
with God even though the highest
court of our land conflicts with the
supreme court of heaven.
We must stay with God regar
dless of what the population and
societal experts tell us what is
necessary to attain a true quality of
life.
If you stay with God there will
be fewer problems here and one
day heaven might be your home
where problems will never con
front you again.
