Issues at the cross
by Bro. Richard Williams
r The role of women is society has
become a very explosive issue. The
emancipated woman is asserting
her liberty with militancy and
aggressiveness
They employ various names tO'
describe themselves: “new
feminists,” “women liberators,”
and “women revolutionaries.”
No matter what they call them
selves, women are stirred up, vocal
and determined to see that they get
the respect, equality and oppor
tunities they desire.
Betty Freidan, in 1963 published
a book, The Feminine Mistique,
which first brought attention to the
frustration that the American
woman has in trying to conform to
the traditional image of housewife
and mother. She is called the Joan
of Arc of the women’s lib
movement.
Mrs Freidan is an unfaithful
Jew, a divorcee,(l969) mother of
three children.
The out-cry of the new feminist
is that they are the oppressed
minority, excluded from positions
of power, exploited by male
dominance secually, economically,
and in almost every other wav.
They are campaigning to
eliminate bras as items of male
chauvinism, and have attempted to
desegregate men’s bars, etc.
They reject the idea that millions
of women could possibly be happy

these housewives as having been

Some women militants refer to
the bondage that women have en
dured as a hangover from Bibical
tradition and morals.
They have cited the apostle
Paul’s apparent negative attitude
toward marriage. First Corin
thians 7:8, his call to wifely
obedience and submission
(Ephesians 5:22, Colossians 3:19),
and his statement that women
should play a silent and submissive
role in the church (I Corinthians
14:34, I Timothy 2:11, 12) as
examples of Paul’s prejudice.
I agree very heartily that women
should get equal pay for equal
work and that they should he
respected, ’"i' I do not jgree with
any woman or man who start
criticizing the Bible.
That was not Paul’s prejudice,
but Paul was giving God’s position
because he was inspired of God (2
Peter 1:21; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17).
What does the Bible say about
the Woman’s position?
And the Lord God siad, It is not
good that the man should be alone;
I will make him a help mate for

him (Genesis 1:18).
But I would have vou know, that
the head of every man is Christ; and
the head of the woman is the man;
andt he head of Christ is God.
For a man indeed ought not to
cover his head, for as much as he is
the image and favor of God: But
the woman is the glory of the man.
For the man is not of the
woman; k "* the woman of
the man. Neither was the man
created for the woman; but the
woman for the man (I Corinthians
11:3,7-9).
In I Timothy 2:9-15, the role of
the woman is described so ex
plicitly: Likewise, ye husbands,
dwell with them according to
knowledge, giving honour unto the
wife, as unto the weaker vessel,
and as being heris together of the
grace of life; that your prayers be
not hindered (I Peter 3:7).
If Christian women would
follow the Bible, they would not
support everything that the
women’s liberation movement
projects. Christ liberates Christian
women in baptism.
Some homes are being torn
asunder because some tes are
rejecting what the Bible leaches on
the role of a woman. The Bible is
still right. My beloved sisters, you
cannot be saved when you reject
what the Bible teacher.
God made men and women and
instituted the home, and let me tel
you, God knows what is best foi
