Homosexuality becomes explosive issue
by Bro. Richard Williams
Homosexuality has become a
troublesome and explosive issue in
this country. The consensus
shaped hy the Judeo-Christian
doctrine has always understood
homosexual orientation and
homosexual genital acts as perver
sions of God’s intention.
Today this view is being
aggressively challenged. A
growing group of avowed and
practicing homosexuals are
cressing for acceptance of
homosexuality as normal and
healthy.
The General Convention of the
Episcopal Church in 1976 adopted
the following resolution: “...it is
the sense of this General Conven
tion that homosexual persons are
children of God who have a full
and equal claim with all other per
sons upon the love, acceptance and
pastoral concern and care of the
church” (Resolution A-69).
The American Psychiatric
Association has removed
homosexuality from its list of
pathologies. There are those who
argue that “constitutional”
homosexuality claiming that
homosexuality is genetic. Others
claim that homosexuality
originates at preconscious levels
personality formation, so early in
iifp as to be immovably fixed as
part of one’s being.
This argument is moving from
the physiological to the

More than orange juice is
flowing from the Florida sunshine
tree when Anita Bryant was
around. Under the name of “Save
Our Children, Inc.,” Bryant asked
Dade Count, Fla., to repeal its or

rights of homosexuals. Such an
ordinance, she claimed, threatens
our children, our homes, our way
of life.
Homosexuality is an abomination,
declared Bryant.

repealing the ordinance.
Just what does the Bible teach
about homosexuality? The Bible
is frank about sexuality. We find
no euphemisms or vague sentimen
tality there. In Genesis, we find
that God made male and female
and there is no mentioning of a
third or fourth type of human
sexual being (Genesus 2:18-25;
Matthew 19:4-5).
The Mosaic Law crystallized the
ceation order into precise, explicit
forms. The verdict upon
homosexual activity is inescapably
clear: “You shall not lie with a
man as with a woman” (Leviticus
18:22, NEB). “If any man has in
tercourse with a man as with a
woman, they both commit an
abomination”, (Leviticus 20:13,
NEB).

Homosexuality violates the basic
sexual structure God created, and
he rigorously condemns it.
What about the New
Testament? Has the harshness of
the Old Testament law been super
seded by the law of Christ, the law
of love? In Romans I, Paul talks
about homoexual desire and ac
tivity and denounces it as
“shameful lust” (Romans 1:26,
NIV). He characterized
homosexuality as abandoning
“Natural relations,” that is, the
normal and normative
heterosexual responses and
behavior. The phrase “natural
relation” in the Greek refers direct
tly to God’s creation order,
meaning that what God intends
men and women to relate sexually.
Today, some people argue that
what Paul was condemning here is
homosexual promiscuity, and not
homosexual activity per se, and
that God can tolerate homosexual
promiscuity, and not homosexual
monogamy just as easily as he can
commend heterosexual
monogamy.
As Paul speaks in Romans 1:26,
he not only criticizes the act of
homosexual love-mating but the
“sinful desire of their hearts” and
the “lust” that “inflamed” them.
In I Corinthians 6:9, Paul again
condemns all homosexual activity
without qualification: “Do not be
deceived; neither the immoral, nor
idolater, nor adultrers, nor
homosexuals...will inherit the

kingdom of God.”
First Timothy 1:10, lists
homosexuals along with immoral
persons, kidnappers liars. oer
jurers - all subject to the con-.-
demnation of God’s law. This is
clear that the New Testament is
against homosexuality.
Our society is going through a
period of profound cultural unrest
and open moral degeneration. The
bill for homosexual rights in
troduced by Congressman Edward
Kock (D-NY) and now mayor of
New York City, and the case of
Larry Flint and Hustler are just
two examples.
The church must confront this
issue with renewed dedication to,
hold up the God-ordained moral
standards. We must teach men
and women trapped J>y their own
sins that if they will repent, Jesus
will wash their sins away. They
must come away from that
lifestyle and stay away in order to
make heaven their home.
Let us as children of the Most
High God rise up in holy in
dignation and fight sin everywhere
—in the church and out of the:
church. We cannot be silent on the
issues that are rocking this nation.
Peter Marshall said that if a man
does not stand with the word of
God! Let us stand at the cross!
The cross is right even if it conflicts
with the Supreme Court of our
land, the scientists, psychologists,
and all the other experts, The cross
is right,
I will praise thee,
0 Lord, among the
people: and I will
sing praises unto
thee among the
nations.
For thy mercy is
great above the
heavens: and thy
truth reacheth unto
the clouds.
Be thou exalted, 0
God, above the
heavens: and thy
glory above all the
