Shall we give up the church?

a building. The church is the body
of Christ (Eph. 1:22). This is a
spiritual body made up by mem
bers. “Now there are members of.
the body of Christ and members in
particular” (ICor. 12:27).
Paul expounds on the foun
dation of the church, “And are
built upon the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ
himself being the chief corner
stone” (Eph. 2:20). Jesus Christ is
the foundation of the church. Un
til God fails, the church cannot
fail.
Men and devils have tried every
possible device to devastate this
foundation. The Caesars hurled
their armies against it unsuc
cessfully. False brethren, false
friends, pretending friends from
within have tried to destroy the
church by denying the deity of
Christ and his atonement.
Saul of Tarsus tried to destroy
the church, going from city to city
as a bloody hound dog, but God
stopped him.
The Catholics endeavored to
destroy it, but it kept on growing.
Things became so terrible until the
church went into hiding for 1260
years, but God preserved it and

protected his glorious church.
Men and women who are trying
to destroy it today are fighting a
losing battle. When the angel shall
put one foot on land and the other
on sea and declare that time that
has always been will be no more,
I when this old world is on fire,
when the moon drips away in
blood, when the sun refuses to
shine, and when the stars are
falling from heaven, the church
that Jesus built will be standing.
No wonder Hebrews 12:28 says,
“Wherefore we receiving a
kingdom which cannot be moved;
let us have grace whereby we may
serve God acceptably with reveran
ce and godly fear.”
Shall we give up the church?
No, no, my brother; you may go to
heaven without health, without
wealth, without fame, without a
great name, without a college
education, without beauty,
without friends, but you cannot go
to heaven without Christ and his
glorious church.

truth (I Tim. 3:15).
The church is the support of the
truth of God, as a pillar supports
a building. The truth itself needs
no support; heresy must be
resisted, and the truth must be
proclaimed.
The church is the ground of the
truth; that is the foundation. God
has established his church in this
world to hold up the truth as a
pillar supports a roof.
When Paul called the church a
pillar, he was not thinking of a
building but rather the family of
God, the children of God. Yet he
drew him metaphor about the
pillar and ground of the truth from
a building, one of the greatest and
most beautiful buildings the world
has ever seen, the temple of Diana.
Paul and Timothy had seen it of
ten. This temple was four times as
large as the Parthenon at Athens,
and constructed on the same
general plan. The roof was
covered with white marble tiles,a

the temple gleamed in the distance
with the brilliancy of a star.
But the chief glory of the temple
was the 120 jasper columns which
upheld the roof. How magnificant
those columns must have been! As
these great pillars upheld the mar
ble roof of Diana’s temple, so the

church, declares Paul, is the
mighty pillar which holds up on
this world, the truth, and by the
truth men are made free from their
sins through Jesus Christ.
It is the duty of the church to
make known the manifold wisdom
of God (Eph. 3:10?. The church
is working under the great com
mission which came from the lips
of Jesus, the holy founder of tne
church. The church is working
under the great commission which
came from the lips of Jesus, the
holy founder of the church: “Go
ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son, and of the
Holy Ghost: Teaching them to ob
serve all things whatsoever I have
commanded you; and . I am with
you always, even unto the end of
the world. Amen.”
The holy founder of the church
wants the church to preach the
truth, the whole truth and nothing
but the truth. Then he gives the
church the blessed assurance that he
will be with the church to the end
of the world. How long? To the
end of the world is the answer.
That is why we can never give up
the church.
