The gospel for changing times
by Bro. Richard Williams
We are living in the days of cer
tified things. In the business
world, we want certified food, cer
tified clothes, certified receipts,
certified mail, and sometimes cer
tified checks.
Modern advertising and false
advertising have conditioned us to
watch for the trademark, the label
and take no substitute. Why even
young people want certified things.
Have I a witness here?
They don’t want just jeans, they
want Jordache jeans, Calvin Klein
jeans. They don’t want just a
shirt, they want a John Henry shirt
an Arrow shirt. They don’t want
just shoes, they want Florsheim
shoes, Stacy Adam shoes. They
don’t want just a tape recorder,
they want a Sony tape recorder,
Panasonic, JVC tape recorder.
Am I right about it?
Ladies don’t want any kind of
dress, they want Devon, R.R.
Russ, Lillie Ann. They don’t want
any cosmetics, they want Estee
Lauder, Helen Rubenstein

cosmetics. Men don’t want any
kind of suit, they want Petricella,
Botony 500. Why some of us will
go from store to store, from mall
to mall looking for certified labels.
We will order certified labels and
wait months to get them. Have I a
witness?
Certified labels are important in
the supermarket. A box of
Kellogg’s cereal should not turn
out to be rat poison. A bottle of
salad dressign should not turn out
to be liquid detergent. A bottle of
Coco-Cola should not turn out to
be bleach, or hamburger turn out
to be horse meat. This would be
utter chaos, sickness, death and
many lawsuits.
Seven people died in Chicago in
1982 when cyanide was mixed with
the Extra Strength Tylenol cap
sules. The world understood that
drugs must not only be certified
but tamper-proof. If we demand.,

This year’s theme, “A Place
Called Home” challenges the
Christian community to see and
hear the stark reality of the
homeless in our midst and around
the world. It challenges Christian

peace.

who have been forced from their

the certified gospel in these chang

What is the certified gospel?
Mr. Webster says: Certify is to
confirm formally as true, accurate,
or genuine, to testify, to vouch for
in writing. The certified gospel is
the original gospel, the ancient
gospel, the pure gospel.
It is not perverted, adulterated,
diluted with the doctrines and
commandments of men, error
preached, error heard, error
believed, error obeyed cannot
make a Christian.
The Certified Gospel is the
glorious gospel, the saving gospel.
I hear Paul saying, ‘‘For I am not
ashamed of the gospel of Christ:
for it is thepower of God unto
salvatin to every one that
believeth; to the Jew first, and also
to the Greek” (Roman 1:16).
The Certified Gospel is heavenly
originated, heavenly concocted,
heavenly revealed, and heavenly in
eternal duration. In these uncer-

tain times, fluctuating times,
changing times, we need the cer
tified gospel.
In these tough times, rough
times, confusing times, topsy turvy
times, we need the certified gospel.
In uncertain times when men
and women are shacking up, we
need the certified gospel. In times
when divorces outnumber
marriages, in times when
homosexuality struts like a proud
peacock, we need the certified
gospel.
I don’t know how you feel about
it, but the song writer summed it
up for me when he wrote: Give me
that old time gospel. Give me that
old time gospel. It was good for
Paul and Silas. And it is good
enough for me. It will take you
home to glory. It will make you
love everybody. Give me that ok
time gospel. Its good enough for
me.
This certified gospel has three
C’s: The Certified Creed, the
Bible, The Certified Church, The
Certified Conversion.
