Should intermarriages be forbidden
By Bro. Richard Williams
In Ezra’s day the princess in
formed him that “that people of
Israel and the priests and the
Levites” had not seperated them
selves from the idolatrous people
and were doing according to their
abominations, and added, “For
they have taken of their daughters
for themselves and for their sons,
so that the holy seed have mingled
themselves with the people of the
land: yea, the hand of the princess
and the rulers have been chief of
this trespass’’ (Ezra 9:2). Ezra then
made earnest prayer and con
fession. The people were greatly
stirred, and made oath that they
would put away their strange wives
(Read Ezra, chapters 9 and 10).
In the days of Nehimiah the

'Be Trim 9 program
to be offered
St. Josepth Hospital’s Family
Life Center will offer free in
troductory sessions to its Be Trim
weight loss program on Jan. 14
&15 at 10:30 a.m., 5:30 p.m. and
7:30 p.m. in the Sister Mary Louise
Conference Room. Jan. 15 session
at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. will be
held in classroom 108.
According to the program direc
tor, Sandy Hobbs, the free evening
session “will illustrate why this
new lifestyle approach is the only
way to permanent weight loss.”
Almost all participants in diet
programs report a “yo-yo affect”
Ms. Hobbs said. “Not only is this
hard on the would-be dieter whose
weight is going up and down, it’s
also hard on the body as it con
tinually adjusts to the stresses and
strains of dramatic changes in
weight.”
According to a recent medical
research study, approximately 70
percent of the program participan
ts in Be Trim report permanent
weight loss still holding more than
a year after the end of the course.
, Further information about Be
Trim can be obtained by calling
during business hours, or, says Ms.
Hobbs, “anyone who is thinking
about losing weight and would like
to make it permanent this time
around can bring a friend who’s
similarly inclined to one of the two
free introductory sessions on either
Jan. 14 or Jan. 15 at 10:30 a.m.,

Nehemiah made no compromise,
but “contended with them, and
smote certain of them, and
plucked of their hair, and made
them swear by God.” He also
chased one of the priests from his
office. From Nehemiah we learn
the cause of Solomon’s fall
“‘Nevertheless even him did
foreign women cause to sin.”
Is there a New Testament Law?
It may be argued that we are not
under the law. True: but are not
evil influences as hurtful now as
then? Is not the marriage tie as
close now as then? And are we not
as liable to led astray by an un
believing companion now as they
were? The marriage law to the
Jew was not arbitrary—there were
reasons for it. The same reasons
are as urgent now as then. A
disregard for these principles has
been the source of much evil
amongst Christians. How many
people have you know to grow
cold and careless through the
blighting influence of an un
believing companion? How many
such marriages have been a cross
to the believer all his days? The
Christian needs help; most of all
does he need the sympathetic help
and encouragement of his com
panion; but the influence of the

Army Pvt. Nathan C. Rembert,

Rembert of 606 Brunswick St.,

station unit training (OSUT) at the
U.S. Army Infrantry School, Fort

OSUT is a 12-week period which
combines basic combat training
and advanced individual training.
The training included weapons
qualifications, squad tactics,
patrolling, landmine warfare, field
communications and combat
operations. Completion of this
course qualifies the soldier as a
light-weapons infantryman and as
an indirect-fire crewman.
Soldiers were taught to perform
any of the duties in a rifle or mor

unbelieving companion is the other
way. The Christian cannot bring
his children up in the nurture and
admonition of the Lord, as he is
commanded to do, without the
pious assistance of his companion.
(Eph. 6:1).
is the New Testament silent on
tnis question? Paul says, “Have
we no right to lead about a wife
that is a believer, even as the rest of
the apOostles, and the brethren of
the Lord, and Cephas?” (I Cor.
9:5). It is implied in this that
Christians have the right to marry
only believers.
Paul says of the widow, “She is
free to marry to whom she will
only in the Lord” (I Cor. 7:39).
This does not signify that the
restriction “only in the Lord” is a
regulation meant solely for the
widows. The general statement
that “she is free to marry whom
she will” might lead her to think
that she was at liverty to marry
without being restrictecd, and Paul
adds “only in the Lord” to show
her that the restriction “only in the
Lord” was also binding in her
case.
Paul’s injunction in I Cor. 7:12-
15 that a believer should not for
sake an unbelieving companion is
thought by some to justify mixed
marriages; but the reverse is true,
else why should the believer think
that we should leave the un-

believer?” With any other, view,
how could such a question arise?
“Be yet not equally yoked with
unbelievers” (IlCor. 6:14). This
does not refer directly to the
marriage relation; but it does
prohibit our joining with un
believers in such away as to make
common cause with them.
Marriage is a joining together in
the closest possible way, and there
is no other relationship where the
contracting parties haqve so much
in common. How, then, can a
believer make common cause with
qan unbeliever in a relationship
where the two become one,
without violating the spirit, if not
the letter, of Paul’s solemn injun
ction?
That Abraham was intensely
religious and a devout worshipper
of the one true God, is seen in his
building altars to God that he
might offer sacrifices thereon. Af
ter he reached Canaan he erected
altars wherever he went, excepting
his short sojourn in foreign lands.
Soon after his arrival in Canaan he
built an altar at Shechem. Then
one near Bethel (Gen. 12:6-8). Af
ter his sojourn in Egypt he retur
ned to his altar near Bethel anc
worshipped God (Gen. 13:3,4)
His supreme test came when he
must built an altar on which tc
sacrifice his own son (Gen. 22:18).
