How much time do you spend with your children ?
The bible by implication teaches
that parents must spend time with
their children. Young women are
to be taught to love their children
(tit. 2:4). Fathers are commanded
to bring up their children in the
nurture and admonition of the
Lord(Eph. 6:4). The very fact that
children are “an heritage of the
Lord’’ (Psalm 127:3) implies the
necessity of spending time with
them.
But this writer is not wise
enough nor experienced enough to
lay down a law as to how many
hours in the day a parent must
spend with his children. In the first
place, some children may demand
more of our time as parents than
others. Children with certain men
tal or physical handicaps may
require more time than other
children. Also, there may be cer
tain periods in a child’s develop-

Some parents may try to
rationalize regarding the time
spent with their children. A father
might say, “Well, I do not have
much time to spend with mv son,
but what time I do spend is quality
time.” But quality time cannot be
developed without some quantity
time as well. A mother might say,
“I spend all day with my children
around the house.” But what good
is being “around the house,”
doing a thousand and one
household chores, and not giving
some special attention to the
children? Children require both
quality and quantity time.
Paul wrote, “And, ye fathers,
provoke not your children to
wrath: but bring them up in the
nurture and admonition of the
Lord” (Eph. 6:4). The word “nur
ture” means “the whole training
and education of children (which
relates to the cultivation of mind
and morals)...” and “includes also
the care and training of the body.”
In order for children to receive a
complete education, parents must
spend time with them. Jesus, as a
boy, received a well-rounded
education. The Bible tells, us,

“And Jesus increased in wisdom
(intellectually) and stature
(physically) and in favor with God
(spiritually) and man (socially)”
(Luke 2:42).
Enough time should be spent
with children to help them develop
spiritually. Solomon wrote,
“Train up a child in the way he
should go: and when he is old, he
will not depart from it” (Prov.
22:6). Time should be taken for
going to Bible classes and worship
services (llTim. 2:15; Heb. 10:25)
and for family devotionals and
memorization of the sacred scrip
tures.
Alexander Campbell said, “I
can but gratefully add, that to my
mother, as well as to my father, I
am indebted for having memorized
in early life almost all the writingss
of King Solomon —his Proverbs,
his Ecclesiastes — and many of the
Psalms of his father David. They
have not only been written on the
tablet of my memory, but incom
porated with modes of thinking
and speaking.”
Enough time should be spent
with one’s children to teach them
how to work (II Thess. 3:10). Rab
bi Jehuda said, “He who does not
teach his son a trade is much the

A parent should take enough
time to see that his child is getting a
quality education. An impatient
teacher once told ten-year-old T.B.
Larrimore, “You might as well
take your pen, ink and paper
home. You’ll never learn to write
in the world.” But his mother
patiently taught him to write.
Enough time should be spent
with one’s children to discipline
them when the need arises. It
might be easier and quicker for a
parent to straighten up a mess
deliberately made by a child than
to teach the child to clean it up.
But the child does not learn in such
instances (Prov. 29:15; Heb. 12:5-
H)
Time should also be spent in
teaching our children how to play.
Learning how to play fair and to
get along with others is involved in
the command in Ephesisans 6:4.
Children need to learn that the
poor sportsmanship demonstrated
by man on all levels of play is un
becoming of a Christian (Matt.
5:13-16).
Parents must spend time with
their children or the time will come
when children will have no time to
spend with parents. _____
