Resisting the errors of a permissive society
By Rev. Richard Williams
The task of parents, with
reference to our subject is twofold:
1) to lead thier children to under
stand the basic errors of a per
missive society, and 2) to lead their
children to resist the basic
errors of a permissive society. To
accomoplish either of the above is
a trememdous challenge to parents
because of the appeal of the per
missive life style and the
glamorous picture painted of it in
movies television, plays, literature
and by their peers—but it can be,
and must be accomplished for the
salvation of our children !

leading our children to understand
and resist the basic errors of a
permissive society is the necessity
of an absolute objective standard
for morality.
This standard is the Bible, God’s
Word for man ! It is inspired
(ITim. 3:16-17), is to guide
Christians in life (Rom. 12:1-2)
and will judge all men at the
judgement (Heb. 9:27; John
12:48).
Not only must this standard be
instilled in children at a very early
age but it must also b e seen in the
lives of the parents (Matt. 5:16).
Understanding the Per
missive Society
The “glamorous bubble” of
permissive living must be burst.
Parents must create in thier
children an awareness of where
permissiveness leads. How? Visit
juvenille court with your teenage
children while it is in session in our
county or city, and afterwards
discuss the tragedy of living
without God’s standard.
It is my firm conviction that
teenagers today need to see the
other side of the story, i.e., the
results of the permissive living of
the “fun loving set.” Parents may
also use newspaper reports of
alcohol related accidents; cases of
drug abuse, etc. to help children
understand that the permissive
society can only offer pleasure for
a season, and in many instances it

effort to address the needs of the

mond County Health Department,

bears very bitter fruit.
Parents need to impress upon
their children the truth that when
you choose a road to follow in life
you also choose the destination of
that road (Matt. 7:13-14).
Resisting The Errors of A
Permissive Society
The basic error of the permissive
society of our day is the philosoph
of “get out of life all that you can
to satify self.” This philosophy
of life leads to many sinful ac
tivities: alcohol, drugs, illicit sex,
gambling, and anything which
gives pleasure.
Why is this philosophy wrong?
(Parents should have reasons for
something being wrong and be
willing to lovingly state them to
thier children as they face certain
decisions in life.
It is wrong because it stands
against God’s standard for His
creatures. Our lives are to be lived
for the glory of God (Gal. 2:20;
Phil. 1:21), and the only this is
possible is for man to be obedient
to God’s will (Heb. 5:8-9). Two
illustrations will help clarify this
point.
The basic error of premarital sex
is not that:
1. The girl may become pregant,
1. The girl may become pregant,
2. One may be scarred
emotionally,
3. One may destroy his/her
reputation,
iment Conference
tment, the Shiloh Community
Center, and several doctors, den
tists, psychologhists, nurses and
financial experts.”
Thompson further stated that
“this conference will differ from
other family conferences in that
the meeting will take place in the
Black community during Black
History Month, with Black leaders
or leaders who deal regularly with
Black families.”
According to Rev. Thompson,
the cost of the conference will be
minimal and registration begins at
5:30 p.m. on Friday at the church,
1630 15th St. ... , ,
The workshop will also feature
an Exhibit of Inventions,
Creations and discoveries by
Blacks throughout history, with
special emphasis on American
Blacks.
The workshop leaders are as
follows: Cynthia Butler, Ph.D,
Stress Awareness; Mr. Herman
Harris, Health and The Black
Family; Rev. John Thompson,
Marriage Enrichement; Dorothy
Dean, RN and Rose Sharon Bryan,
Family Planning; Chaplain A.C.
Redd, Death and Dying;
Chaplan Otis Smith, Single
Parent Families; Robetta McKen
zie, Ph.D, Preparation for Dating
Courtship, and Marriage; Attor
ney John H. Ruffin, Conferenct
for Unwed Mothers and Fathers
Rev. Robert Moore, Ministry to
Young Single Adults; and Mr.
John Reynolds, Family Money
Management.

4. One may contact VD.
It is wrong because it is in op
position to God’s will (Gen. 2
;24,1
Cor. 7:1-2; Heb. 13:4) for
mankind, there IT IS A SIN (I
John 3:4)!
Smoking pot (marijuana) is
wrong for the Christian because it
violates the word of God.
1. It is detrimental to the physicsal
body (ICor. 6:19),
2. It is against the law (Romans
13),
3. It is not an act of self love (Matt.
22:39).
® . It controls the individual and
renders him incapable of operating
normally (I Cor. 6:12).
There fore, this act which brings
pleasure to a great number of in
dividuals is a sin!
True success
From the standard (God’s
Word) it must be pointed out that
whatever we sow we will reawp
(Gal. 6:7-8), and that an accoun
ting will be given for our life
whatever life style we follow (John
5:28-39; II Cor. 5:10). From the
same standard a keen desire to live
eternally in heaven must be created
in the hearts of the young.
Admittedly, this difficult to do
in a materialistic society, but it can
be accomplished and when it is it
will go far in helping our youth
to resist thelure of a permissive
lifestyle.
An alternative choice must be
presented to young people today,
and Moses is an excellent example.-
Moses, faced with a formidable
decision which would affect his
eternal salvation, chose a life of
suffering over a life of “per
missiveness,” i.e., all that Egypt
could offer (Hebrews 11:25).
Veiwing the decision of Moes
from our vantage point we know
he made the right decision and we
know that he was truly suc
cessful!
Young people who follow
Moses’ example of putting God
first in their lives can enjoy the
same success.
May God give all parents the
wisdom to lead their children to
overcome the permissive life stule,
and to be successful like Moses,
Joseph, Daniel and others who
gave themselves to God.
