The Augusta News-Review February 23,1985 Dick Gregory's nutritional formula requested by Ethiopian officials Social activist and health en thusiast Dick Gregory has made history by becoming the first per son to confront the problem of starvation in Ethiopia from a nutritional standpoint. Acting upon requests by Ethiopian medical officials urging him to ad dress the problems of malnutrition, Mr. Gregory, has in troduced his 4X nutritional for mula to health officials there. The formula represents a culmination of 15 years of research by Mr. Gregory and researchers at health departmens of prestigious univer sities nationwide. Mr. Gregory was contacted by three prominent Ethiopian medical and health officials. The officials are Dr. Demessie Habte, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Addis Ababa Univ.', Ethiopia; Mr. Aklilu Meaque, of the Ethiopian Relief and Rehabilitation Commission; and Dr. Aduguaw Getahun, of the Ethiopian Piatric Clinic. The trio were familiar with Dick Gregory’s Slim Safe Bahamian Diet and his crusade to learn the causes of hunver. They assessed Black Belt Three From Page 1 looking under every rock.” Albert Turner, a long time civil rights leader, was president of the Alabama Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1965. He was active during the murder of civil rights leader Jimmy Lee Jackson, and was the principal organizer in the historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala. in the first Selma to-Montgomery March for Voting Rights led by Martin Luther King. The Selma-To-Montgomery march led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act during the Johnson administration which en francised the nation’s Black •citizens with the equal right to vote. Turner has been a continuous thorn in the side of many rural Alabama white politicans as he has been a major force in the rise of Black political power in rural Alabama counties. The indictments have precipitated strong reaction from Alabama Blacks and national civil rights leaders. Dr. Joseph Lowery, national president of the SCLC(Southern Christian Leader ship Conference), and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, former presidential candidate, have vented their outrage and begun their support of the three indictees. The SCLC has stated publicly that the planned March 3rd Selma- To-Montgomery, Re-enactment March will now take on renewed meaning. “Everything has changed, yet nothing has changed” said Lowery. The indictments against the Black Belt Three as they have ben called culminate a six month in vestigation by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s office. It has been learned that other in vestigations are on-going involving Black leaders in other predominan tly Black counties under the con trol of Black elected officials. No investigation is being con ducted in any of the Black Belt Counties where whites are in con trol politically. According to co-counsel Chest nut, The Black Belt Three are scheduled to come to trail in Selma in March, ironically, the time of the re-enactment March from Selma to Montgomery. But Chest nut is not necessarily pleased with such a quick trial date. He said f it took tne government six mon ths to investigate, and they want us to go to trial in justXWQmpnths.” ■ Corner Bth & Ellis 722-4507 CAPRI CINEMA Hr For MOVIES TITLES and SHOW TIMES Call: 722-4507 \ CAPRI » CINEMA | ADULTS ONLY | r Support UNCF »•••••••••••••••••*•• « • • . . Page 6 that the activist’s 4X Formula, found in the diet, might provide some answers to the crisis-ridden problem of starvation plaguing the country. The rationale behind this is that the grains and other food stuffs being imported to the star ving people, might not be nutritious enough to starve off nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, Dick Gregory was contacted through Dr. James P. Carter chairman of Tulane University’s Department of Nutrition, where Mr. Gregory’s nutritional formula is being studied. Dr. Carter will work with Ethiopian officials as they ex pertiment with the Formula to make clinical observations such as rate of weight gain, disappearance of edema, return of hair texture and color, clearing up of skin rashes, time it takes for diarrhea to subside, return of vitality and etc. Mr. Gregory noted that the ap peal by the Ethiopian officials conincides with activities by the newly-established Foundation for the Elimination of World Hunger, which he founded. g INVITATION TO BID I Bib County Senior Citizens, J line., is accepting sealed bids j [from qualified vendors for al (contract to provide homej ■delivered meals for a Nutrition| jprogram for the Elderly. t Bids for the program which [ ■runs from July 1, 1985|] jthrough June 30, 1986 will belj (received until March 21, 1985:i [at 1:30 p.m. A public opening|| |of sealed bids will be at 2:oo[| [p.m. on March 21, 1985, atlj [538 First St., Macon, Georgia. |i Bid specifications and in-[| ■formation relevant to the con-!] [tract may be obtained by con-|| (tacting: J ■Bib County Senior Citizens, Inc. He performed this mission as aprt of his work with the organization, Black Americans Response to the African Crisis (BARAC). The comedian-turned-social activist’s health crusades are legion. After tipping the scales at 300, and after being a whiskey drinker and chain smoker in the 50s, he went on his first fast. The results were so dramatic that he became a health devotee—other fasting to illustrate a problem of world concern. The popularity of his nutritional drink mix is underscored by the fact that he recently singend an unprecedented SIOO million con tract with the Ohio-based Cernitin America, Inc., for the U.S.A marketing rights to his new weighi loss product, Dick Gregory’s Slim Safe Bahamian Diet.
