International Planned Parenthood Names First Woman Secretary-General Miss Julia Henderson, United Nations Associate Commissioner for Technical Cooperation, has just become the first woman Secretary-General of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). She recently left UN headquarters in New York to start her new duties in the organization’s London headquarters. Miss Henderson succeeds the late Sir Davis Owen and was appointed by the IPPF honorary officers. She is responsible to the international governing body representing family planning associations throughout the world. C ommenting on her appointment and new responsibilities, Miss Henderson said, “I am convinced that the population problem deserves a higher priority in terms of development resources than it has yet been given by the membership of the United Nations.” She emphasized that “unless governments and the United Nation agencies make wise, determined efforts to reduce the rate of population growth, all out efforts to raise standards of living for the people of the developing countries, to improve the environment, and to enhance the dignity and status of women are bound to to frustrated.” As Secretary-General, Miss Henderson will head the voluntary non-profit Federation which assists and supports family planning associations in more than 100 countries, most of which are in the developing areas of Asia, Africa and Latin America. The organization’s work is financed through voluntary contributions from all parts of the world and by support from the governments of Britain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States. Planned Parenthood Federation of America is the *U.S. member of the international organization. Miss Henderson said the IPPD “can play a catalytic role in stimulating both governments and volunteers to greater efforts in this field. The fact hat IPPF works ; entirely through national family planning associations, depending on indigenous leadership, insures that the cultural values of each nation and peoples will be respected - and that the major focus will be on the welfare of the family and the health of the mother and child. “At the same time,” she added, “the larger interest of mankind to protect not only his environment but to save the planet for succeeding generations must be an important part of information and education of the Federation.” Miss Henderson, who rose to the highest position in the UN ever held by a woman i during her 25-year career, said “As a United Nations official concerned with development ALL THAT FIGURES ON THE HIGH "SEE” fi afls <£ JfrOr 'LfIKK F> fs |W Hr w. OUIBOORS BY DEAN WOHLGEMUTH GEORGIA GAME AND FISH COMMISSION My Fishing Partner ATLANTA (PRN) - A warm March sun drenched us as we walked a quarter mile to the small pasture pond. In no time, it seemed so warm that jackets were shed, not long after our tackle was rigged and our lines were in the water. This was not a fishing paradise that I would recommend to anyone .. .far from it. It was just a cattle watering hole that, from the fisherman’s standpoint, had everything wrong with it. It was sadly overpopulated with tiny bream and shiners, to the point that fishing was very poor to say the least. It was, however, convenient to us and my son and I had been looking forward all winter to the opportunity of getting out, just him and me, to wet a line. Warren, my eight year old off-spring, is an enthusiastic angler to say the least. I felt a lot of pride as I watched him cast his pushbutton spinning outfit. He’s been using an outfit like that for about five years now, and handles it like a veteran. Though he’s only a youngster, he’s one of my very favorite fishing partners. He handles his rod more safely than a great many anglers I’ve fished with. I’ve drummed that into him. He’s persistent and never complains that the day is getting long and that he’s getting tired of fishing.. .quite the reverse as a matter of fact He complains when it’s dark and time to go home (so do I). Most important of all, he’s my son. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction and pride to fish with my own boy. But ’’m certain that whether he realizes it or not, it does him a lot more good than it does me. I know he enjoys it, and begs for it. ‘Called upotT to work with a scout group or boys club, or perhaps a class in Swiss Can't Miss Bl s**.’ v wßiJ* J ~ 1 ill *’ w ■ From Switzerland, a new idea in desserts, Crepes Cheri-Suisse. The ultimate in sophisticated desserts is crepes, those tiny little pancakes so favored in continental cuisine, flambeed at tableside or brought flaming to the table. An epicurean version is crepes Cheri-Suisse. Preparation is simple, results elegant. CREPES CHERI-SUISSE % cup sweet butter 6 tablespoons Cheri-Suisse 1 orange Lic l ueur % cup (2 oz.) % cup (2 ounces) confectioners’ sugar Brandy For about 1 dozen crepes, cream together confectioners’ sugar and sweet butter. Grate outside part of orange peel, add to mixture, stir in the juice of the orange and 3 tablespoons Cheri-Suisse chocolate-cherry liqueur. Place all in a hot electric skillet or chafing dish and heat until it bubbles and reduces slightly. Using a fork and spoon, dip each crepe into the hot mixture, fold in quarters and put to one side. Sprinkle all the crepes with a little confectioners’ sugar, add 3 more table spoons Cheri-Suisse and the brandy to the remaining flavored butter in the pan. Light the liquid and serve. ♦ ♦ * The basic recipe for French Dessert Crepes is quite simple, and the delicious little pancakes may be made ahead of time or even frozen for later use. CREPES 4 eggs 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup milk 1 teaspoon salt cup butter, melted 1 tablespoon Cheri-Suisse Liqueur 2 teaspoons sugar Beat the eggs well, add milk, flour, melted butter, salt, sugar and Cheri-Suisse. Mix thoroughly and let stand in refrigerator for several hours. Stir again. If the batter is heavier than a rich cream, add a bit more milk. Heat a heavy 7 or 8-inch skillet, brush with melted butter. Place in a generous tablespoon of batter, manipulating the skillet so the batter spreads evenly over the bottom. As soon as the crepe browns on one side, flip it quickly and brown. If for immediate use, stack and keep warm until all are made. To freeze, pack the crepes into piles of a half dozen or so, wrap in freezer paper or foil. Frozen crepes must be thawed thoroughly before being used to keep them from tearing when separated. school, where I find a wide range of variety among the boys. Out of a group of 20 boys on the average, I’ll usually find just one boy who really knows anything about the outdoors and who really loves fishing and hunting. This boy, invariably, has known what it is like to go fishing or hunting with some regularity with his father. You can tell the difference. He’s well-behaved. He’s alert. His questions are intelligent. Then there are a group of boys who are interested, in fact hungry for information about hunting and fishing and wildlife. They know little, and have little or no experiences afield. And then we come to an unruly group which seems to have no discipline. They pay little attention to what goes on. I’d bet their school work receives similar lack of attention. They know nothing about the outdoors and couldn’t care less. One thing is obvious .. .the more deeply interested a boy is in outdoor recreation, the more considerate he is of those around him. The less interested he is, the less he cares whether he’s bothering others in the overall group. He may seem cocky, but somehow you get the feeling he’s unsure of himself, and trying somehow to prove to himself and others that he is sure of himself. The youngster who is outdoor minded doesn’t try to prove himself...he doesn’t have to. There’s no better way to have a fine father-son relationship than to share frequent and regular fishing trips with him. It will be time well spent. Your son will make you proud of him. THE NEWS-REVIEW, MARCH 25, 1971 The Official Report from Georgia's Big League Team ATLANTA (PRN) - The Braves have never been noted for speed on the base paths, but Luman Harris may have a few surprises for Atlanta fans in 1971. A lineup of names like Ralph Garr, Oscar Brown, Sonny Jackson, Marty Perez and Felix Millan on the roster could make Atlanta the fastest team in baseball. “One thing is for sure,” Harris says. “We’ll be running more often this season than ever before. ” Harris says young outfielder Oscar Brown is the best bunter in baseball. That gives the Braves two real demons of the bases because Garr was reported to have been timed running to first base in three seconds flat “I wouldn’t be surprised if Ralph is the fastest player ever in the big leagues,” Atlanta Vice President Paul Richards said. Garr, who has been tagged as the Road Runner by Warner Brothers, Inc., is possibly the most exciting player of the 1971 Spring Training. After getting seven hits in his first nine at bats this spring and stealing five straight bases without being caught, fans throughout Florida have readily taken to yelling “Beep Beep” whenever he reaches base. Baseball experts are saying that the Braves- have four pitchers who could possibly win 20 games in 1971 - including Phil Niekro, Ron Reed, Jim Nash and Pat Jarvis. But Luman Harris says there may be a sleeper in camp. “Everyone seems to overlook George Stone,” Harris says. “There must be some good reason that all those teams tried to trade for him over the winter.” The Congratulations to the NEWS-REVIEW from North Augusta Broadcasting Corporation WTHB 1550 on your AM dial WZZW 103. on your FM dial About A- 0 - 95 ® « k Arabs oP ene “ f » S Bk the First ||F pharmades ■ IIL in .he cam phor, ««»; Uh such *U9S = enic ,„ (o ao S Inr alcohol. bo.«“ nd c ., io „s are co'- ■F ph o. m °cies.P-«'^ xe<J ... checked k\ Wt * nu ptUVtR -nt THE NEWS - REVIEW 930 GWINNETT ST. Cecil Upshaw is out of a job - as a writer, that is. He received notice from the Shreveport Times that the paper does not plan to continue running his weekly column during the coming season. Cecil, who has written for the paper the past two years, says, “I really regret what happened because I truly enjoyed writing the column.” Ratings by his hometown paper showed that his articles were the fourth most popular feature of the entire paper and have gone up from seventh most popular a year ago. Why did they discontinue it? “I think it’s because I’m not living in Shreveport anymore,” Cecil said. Hank and Tommie Aaron rank first among all-time home run hitting brother duos, while the Boyer brothers, Clete and Ken, rank second.
