NEWS-REVIEW MAY 20, 1971 - THE i NEWS-REVIEW SPORTS Henri Freeman JBagaM i Chance Is Down A few years ago, Dean Chance was looked upon as one of the great pitchers in the major leagues. Today, however, the one-budding mounds-man is floundering around with the American League pitchers in the also-ran category. Chance, now toiling for the Detroit Tigers, is yet to notch his first win of the 1971 season. In the Tigers loss to the Boston Redsox Monday, he absorbed his sixth defeat. Now Baseball Is Alone ... Tuesday night the ABA and NHL ended play for the 1970-71 season, with the Utah Stars winning the ABA title and the Montreal Canadains taking the NHL title. With these two basketball and hockey league titles settled the national sports focus will now be primarily on baseball. There was a time when baseball from April to October had the attention of the sports world pretty much to itself. This no longer is the case for professional basketball and hockey now remain in the sports highlight during the spring portion of the baseball season. And if it continues the way it is going now, it might just happen that baseball will have “company” more than just during the spring part of the season. Will It Stick? Last week it was reported that Duane Thomas, the Dallas Cowboys’ outstanding rookie, has decided to retire from pro football. If he sticks to this decision, it will be a tremendous shock to the Dallas Cowboys, to professional football and to the many followers of the game. Contract difficulties have been given as the reason for this shaking decision. This writer feels that there has been a little premature decision-making by Thomas, the 1970 rookie-of-the year. Somehow it is felt from this corner that the Cowboy’s star, who was the prime reason for . You wonder, does he never come home fishless? Are there anglers who never fail to catch a fish? Perhaps, I don’t know. I can’t prove it. However, I doubt seriously that this is so. Let’s be realistic, huh? Who’s going to talk about those days when they don’t catch fish .. .or get game when hunting? If you did, you’d be laying yourself in for plenty of ribbing from friends. Yet, I don’t know anyone who can honestly say they have never come home fishless, and I know some mighty good anglers. Os course, these are the fellows who are least likely to be skunked, and when they do hit into the fish, they are just NUMBER ONE Package Shop "PARTY PRICES" 2856 Deans Bridge Rd. Who will be the prime mover in this change of decision remains to be seen. Somewhere along the line somebody is being stubborn; so something has got to give. In all probability, it will be the Cowboys who definitely will miss Thomas if his retirement decision sticks. However, giving in on the part of the former West Texas State star is not out of the realm of probability. On the other hand, there are quite a number of fishermen in our midst who hear others talk about the fine fishing in our state and wonder where it all is.. .they can’t find it. And I’m flooded with questions. “How can I catch more fish?” Well, its going to take a bit of effort. You’ve done that? Then we’ll have to try to channel your efforts into the right direction. The first consideration is which species you’re seeking, and secondly the waters you fish Learn something about the kind of fish you’re after, what their, habits are and the kind of places you’d expect to find them. Most of us can’t spend too much time and money on long or frequent trips. Os course, I think some of our Georgia waters rank very high on the “best” list. What I’m saying is, try to select water close enough you can go more often. But let’s say there’s a lake near you where you fish frequently, and you know it has fish in it. But you’re not catching them. White it’s fun to travel around to other waters, you must realize that unless you fish with a local expert, strange waters aren’t likely to produce an abundance of fish. So your best bet is to stick to that “home” lake most of the time and get to know it well enough that you increase your chances of having a good catch. If you’re having no results at all, try to find someone who does catch fish there frequently, who will take you and show you a few spots. Remember these spots, but also don’t fail to notice his methods .. .what he fishes and how. What works in one spot might not somewhere else.. .then again, it’s worth a try because it just might work. Many of us are prone to stick to shoreline fishing because we see what appears to be good cover above the water. Remember, what’s above the water doesn’t help the fish. You’ll have to find good cover underwater. One of the very best ways to do this is look the lake over thoroughly, marking a map as you do, when the water is quit'e low. Best time to do this is in the winter. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO I I DON'T LET THE BIG WHEELS I I TURN YOU AROUND I I VOTE NO!!
