GIBSON BOWS
The St. Louis Cardinals fire-balling righthander, Bob Gibson,
is on the “shelf’ for twenty-one days but not because he
wanted to be or chose to be. He’s there because he was injured
recently in a game between the Cards and the Atlanta Braves,
and the manager placed him on the disabled list where he must
remain under league rules a minimum of twenty-one days.
Gibson told a reporter recently that he did not favor the
decision to put him on the disabled list, for he felt it would
take a few days and not three weeks to get healthy again.
Unfortunately the last word did not rest with the big super
star, but with Red Schoendeist, the manager.
The Cardinals have been on a tear for the past week or so
without the effective pitching of Gibson, with Steve Carlton
and some relatively new “chunkers” giving good performances.
The Red Birds have become the class of the eastern division of
the National League. Our Atlanta Braves can attest to that.
If Gibson can come back after twenty-one days inactive and
perform like he has over the past few years, we just might see a
play-off for the National League championship in the fall
between the streaking San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis
Cardinals that would be a series filled with big names in
baseball.
LANEY’S “LITTLE GENERAL” GRADUATES;
LEAVES FOOTBALL BEHIND
After ably performing on the gridiron for David Dupree at
Lucy Laney High School, pint-size quarterback, Ricardo
(Ricky) Daggett, graduated last week. With graduation, Daggett
said “good bye” to football as a player.
The young footballer was noted for his quick hands and deft
passing as he guided the Laney Wildcats’ offensive attack for
most of two seasons. Only his size is keeping him from
furthering his gridiron aspirations at some college.
THE BIG QUESTIONS:
What’s happening to the graduating athletes at Laney and
Josey this year?
Is it that grants-in-aid are not given in this area?

Shopping Sears
WTj INEZ
I’m really glad to see that Father's Day is almost here.
(Remember, it’s Sunday. June 20th this year.) And as I
have the kind of husband who doesn't want me to buy
his clothes for him, it's fun to have a special occasion.
Now I’ll have a legitimate excuse to get the things I
know he needs. And these days, they're making the
men’s apparel so colorful that I really enjoy shopping
for my husband and for my son . . . especially around
Father's Day.
As a starter for gift ideas, I’ll be trying to get my hus
band to build up his underwear supply. Sears offers a
wide choice of styles that ought to please any man . . .
T-shirts, V-necks or sleeveless tops, boxer or brief-type
shorts . . . and they're now at sale prices.
Speaking of Colors
It seems like there’s hardly a color in the rainbow
that isn’t among those represented in Sears Comfort
Shirts. These nationally advertised PERMA - PREST
shirts are extremely popular and very much in fash
ion with a wide choice of collar styles and sleeves, short
or long. Look for them in the Men's Store at Sears and
if you look right now. you’ll find them at a very handsome
savings, too. Comfort Shirts are something that any
Dad will appreciate. And don't forget the go-together
ties to complete the gift idea.
If sport shirts are what Dad needs, then you should
see the newest fashions, all PERMA-PREST in solids. '
classic and patterns . . . many at sale prices just in time
for Father’s Day giving.
Slacks for Spring
Naturally, Dad ought to have some attractive new
slacks or shorts to compliment his fashionable shirts.
Here's where Sears really comes to your aid. Give-n -
Take stretch slacks, knit slacks and many other sum
mer weaves represent most appreciated gifts
One trip to the Men’s Store at your local Sears will
convince you that Sears has Everything for Father s

AUGUSTA CUBS STAY ON
TOP WITH WIN OVER
SYLVANIA
The Augusta Cubs, with
Savannah close on their heels,
defeated Sylvania last Sunday
at Coleman Park, 12-7. The
win kept the Cubs on top in
Ogeechee League play as the
Savannah entry defeated
Millen in two games at
Savannah.
The Cubs have lost only
two games this season, both
coming at the hands of the
strong Millen team. It is the
Millen team and Savannah
that pose the biggest threat to
Pete Coleman’s Cubs holding
on to first place in the league.
Supporters of the Cubs will
not get a chance to see them
play again at home until
Sunday, June 20 when they
will play host to Savannah.

The Official Report from
Georgia's Big League Team
ATLANTA (PRN) - One of
the most entertaining nights of
the year at Atlanta Stadium is
when groups of baseball fans
put their imagination to
making banners for the
colorful Banner Night
competition.
Banner Night this season for
the Braves is coming up on
Friday, June 25, and will
include a parade of the works
of art around the field
between games of the
Braves-Reds doubleheader.
Cash prizes will be given for
the best banners in the
following categories: 1) SIOO
goes to the Most Colorful
Banner, 2) SIOO to the Most
Original Banner, 3) SIOO to
the banner that Best Depicts
the Spirit of the Braves, and 4)
S2OO goes to the Best Overall
Banner.
Banners in the past have
included everything from
painted bodies to a tepee with
the pictures of the individual
Braves painted on it. But no
matter how it looks, any
banner is fun to make, and the
cash prizes awarded by the
Braves on Banner Night can
make the time spent in making
a banner well worthwhile.

Dent Falters
In Atlanta
Tournament
Jim Dent, Augusta’s current
“contribution” to ‘ professional
golfs touring professionals,
made his bid to get into the
spotlight last week when he
played in the Atlanta Golf
Classic. Being only a “hop”
and a “skip” from Augusta,
he no doubt wanted badly to
prove that he could hold his
own.
After shooting a fine 68 on
Thursday, the first day of the
Classic, Dent lost Iris touch
and shot a 75 on Friday and
76 on Saturday and Sunday.
The above-seventy scores of
Saturday and Sunday knocked
the ex-Lucy Laney High
footballer out of contention
for any of the big prize
money that awaited the low
scorers.
1971 Braves?
The answer’s easy. The play
of Ralph Garr has been
exciting and entertaining to
everyone. A recent poll in
New York revealed that the
Braves were the single team
that Mets fans most wanted to
see this season. The reason,
they said, was to see Ralph
“the Road Runner” in action.
They got their wish a couple
of weeks ago, along with
millions of other Americans
on national television. Ralph
responded by stealing bases
the first two times he reached
base and hitting a double to
start a late inning rally for the
Braves. The Mets finally won
the game in extra innings, but
nobody walked away
disappointed by Ralph Garr.
The recent four-hitter by
big Braves righthander Tom
Kelley in Montreal brought
back memories of Kelley’s
entry to the big leagues in
1965 with the Indians. He had
just finished winning 11
consecutive games for the
Portland farm club for
Cleveland, and then a
19-year-old, he was considered
by many as the best young
pitcher in baseball.
Kelley injured his pitching
arm the next season, and only
a self-paid-for operation
enabled him to come back and
sign with the Braves as a free
agent last year. He proceeded
to post a 7-1 record with a
2.61 ERA for the Braves’
Shreveport farm team last
season.
The Braves new shortstop,
Zoilo Versalles, says he is back
to the form that made him an
American League All-Star in
1965. Zorro, as he was called
in his years with the Twins,
injured his back in 1968, but
an operation for a slipped disc
has allowed him to play easily
now for the firs' time in three
seasons. Maury Wills, who was
Zoilo’s manager in winter
league this year, says the
Braves’ new acquisition can be
the best shortstop in the
National League right now.
The date and opponent has
been set for the 1971 Braves
Old-Timers Game. The Braves
of old are scheduled to play
the best of the St. Louis
Cardinals’ former stars in the
contest that will take place
before the regular
Braves-Astros game at the
Stadium on Saturday, August
, 14.

Georgia Offers
Much To Vacationers
ATLANTA (PRN) -
School’s out! This means
vacation time to Mom and
Dad, as well as to the
youngsters. Nearly everyone
has a week or two to get away
from it all during the summer,
and besides that there are
several summer weekends that
will be spent on trips.
Vacations mean different
things to different people, but
a high percentage of Georgians
see this time as the
opportunity to enjoy outdoor
sports, including camping,
fishing and boating. Many
people think first of far-away
places when they think of
summer vacation .. .but those
with budget problems may
decide this is the year to stay
closer to home, forego that
“dream trip” and try to
salvage a good time in their
home state.
Well, the truth of the
matter is you can visit some of
the best vacation land
anywhere right here in
Georgia, do it on a budget,
and on top of that not wear
yourself out with a long trip.
If camping is your thing,
there’s no reason you can’t
stay well within your budget
anywhere in Georgia. There
are plenty of fine camping
spots near good fishing and
boating areas. If you prefer
more comfort, you still should
have no problem finding
motels in most areas.
Hot summer weather brings
to mind two particular types
of vacation sites .. .mountains
and seashore. Georgia has
both. And there is camping
available at both places. The
mountains have abundant
National Forest land with
ample camping, and offer
good trout fishing. You have a
choice of improved campsites,
or anything on down the line
to backpacking into back
country. The Appalachian
Trail is a favorite of the rugged
walking campers.
There’s a fine campground
on Jekyll Island whery you’ll
be on the seashore if that’s
what appeals to your taste.
Here you can swim or surf

fish, rent a boat or take your
own, and fish the inland
saltwater or go offshore to, for
example, the Sapelo Reef.
There’s no need to go to other
states.. .Georgia has an
abundance of saltwater
fishing. Many fish camps along
the coast have camping
facilities.
These are the two most
obvious directions for the
stay-at-home camper to go,
but if he likes warmwater
lakes, he’s missing a bet if he
doesn’t consider the large
reservoirs. There are lakes with
good camping, boating and
fishing over almost all of our
state. Giving suggestions of
which to visit would be much
like listing a directory of all
the lakes in the state.
Nearly all of the lakes, of
course, offer anything a boater
may want. All have good
fishing. And most have good
camping. For example, the
biggest lakes in the state are
built by the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers and have an
abundance of good boat
ramps, public use areas, and
camping areas. A suggestion
here would include such lakes
as Hartwell, Walter F. George,
Clark Hill and Seminole. Os
course, Lanier and Allatoona
are popular, but for this
reason are often quite
crowded. These two lakes do
have much to offer.
In the mountains, Lakes
Burton, Blue Ridge, Chatuge
and Nottely can fill the bill
beautifully.
Camping facilities and
public boat ramps are scarce at
most of the other lakes, but
fishing is good. You’ll have to
rely on fish camps for camping
areas and ramps. Good lakes
to consider include Sinclair,
Jackson, and Blackshear.
More details about where
there are fish camps and what
facilities they can supply, may
be obtained by writing the
Georgia Game and Fish
Commission, Public
Information Office, 270
Washington St., S.W., Atlanta,
Georgia, and ask for the Fresh
Water Fishing brochure.
