News—Review - June 24, 1971, FROM THE PILL BOX Father David C. Streett | AUGUSTA AREA PLANNED j PARENTHOOD ASSOCIATION! MALE PILL TO BE TRIED Clinical trials of a contraceptive pill for men are in the planning stage in London, to begin in about one year. The drug has been tested successfully on male animals. Professor Dennis Lacy, head of the Department of Zoology at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School, who has been working on the project for twelve years, told a press conference that he hoped to apply shortly for a license to carry out the trials. These would initially be limited to about one dozen carefully chosen men. CHICANOS PRACTICE BIRTH CONTROL The Population Research Center of the University of Texas at Austin is about to complete a study entitled “Family and Fertility Among Mexican-Americans” which is based upon personal, in-depth interviews with 348 couples who live in Austin. It discloses that 7 out of 10 married Mexican-American women in that city have used birth control pills at one time or another. To quote Dr. Harley L. Browing, director of the center: “We wanted to find out in this study if the general low socio-economic status among Mexican-Americans could explain the high fertility rate. In other words, so they have more children because of their Roman Catholic culture that encourages large families or because they’re poor and uneducated? This study is indicating to us that the latter (poor and uneducated) is true, that it’s not the easiest thing in the world to control fertility, and that education about contraceptives makes a big difference.” ACCESS TO ABORTION FAVORED The National Association of Social Workers at a recent meeting went on record as favoring legalized abortion despite strong opposition from some of its members. The following statement was issued: “We stand with a client in her rights to make a free decision on abortion plans without coercion and unhampered by unrealistic laws, inadequately delivered health services and insufficient medical lacilities, and insensitive and punitive attitudes of the health professions and ancillary personnel.” S7O BILLION WORTH What differnece does it make if Americans have two children per family or three? Plenty, according to a presidential commission, in terms of the demands placed on our society. It can mean S4O BILLION MORE a year for public education, perhaps S3O BILLION more a year just to maintain present health standards. The Commission on Population Growth and the American Future, assuming a population of 300 million by the year 2000 with three children per family, also concludes that the economy will have to produce 20 PERCENT MORE that would be necessary to provide the two-child family with the same standard of living. ROOM FOR ONE MORE? One of the oldest and truest of folktales concerns the farmer with a problem: how could he get his crop into town quickly and inexpensively? His ten-ton truck was a non-polluting camel, and his answer was of course to load up the beast and walk it off to the city. The only decision was, when to stop loading? No parallel at all between the camel and our Earth. We think: “Always room for one more. We can use vastly more air and water than we recycle forever without worrying, just incidentally adding 72 million more users each year. Something will come up. If we can go to the moon we can probably eat granite. Or perhaps, if we set our minds to it, a shuttle can be arranged to planets in Alpha Centauri, the closest star and solar system. (Some shuttle: a spacecraft moving at a million miles an hour would only take 3000 years one way- and if the two people who began the trip multiplied at our present 2% increase rate, when they arrived at their new home, their family would include 10,000,000,000,000,000 rocket mates!) We can work out the details later.” When will we ever learn? CAPSULE IN TROUBLE A quest for a once-a-year contraceptive device, under study at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, has hit a snag. Investigators report that there has been an unacceptably high expulsion rate from the uterus of the intrauterine capsule in which contraceptive harmone (progesterone) is contained. The IUD capsules, made of silicone rubber, have been tried in various shapes and sizes, but 21 of the 109 volunteer women under test have expelled one or the other after a few weeks or several months. So it’s going to be a while longer. NEW INSURANCE BENEFITS Legal abortion, maternity benefits for single persons and hospitalization for alcoholics and drug addicts have been included among many new benefits for members of the Wisconsin State Employees Association. The changes have been agreed upon between the state and Wisconsin Blue Cross-Surgical Care Blue Shield, Milwaukee, which carried the insurance. SUPPORT DIMINISHING A recent sociological study conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago has found that support among U.S. Roman Catholic priests for their church’s teaching on birth control and divorce is waning sharply and also that a majority ►♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦ ♦ elect t : £3 dan cross : ♦ ' YOUR SHERIFF WITH i ♦ THE HELPING HAND ♦ 4 PAID FOR BV SUPPORTERS OF DAN CROSS Page 4 Regional Advisors Appointed BBHBB - MB eW Bl ■■BIBMBMHBBMHBBBMBBflMM • : -’MB'«mbmb mb BB 1 mill illtllllllKliliß 'fwAßwßl' I I s Bl 111 IHlilWhl i Ttflli B B i M Ml!1 i Innllfßsiii s -‘llllll -B ] Fa B Is! fill 111111 l VBIIIIS 11181 l we I \ LI Bill I 111 I Uh! Harper, Jr., Governor Carter, and Central Savannah River Area Planning and Development Commission Chairman, Leroy Williams. Governor Jimmy Carter has appointed two regional advisors for each of the 19 Area Planning and Development Commissions in the State to assist in the administration of his Goals for Georgia program. The advisors from this region are: James C. Abbott, of priests now favor making clergy celibacy a matter oi cnoice. BOOKLET OFFERED The Massachusetts Commission on Christian Unity (818 Middle Street, Fall River, Mass. 02721) an ecumenical group, is providing clergymen with a publication containing official positions taken by religious bodies on the subject of abortion. The preface states: “The morality of abortion is an important question in our society today.... True understanding of one another’s positions cannot but help advance the goals of ecumenism.” Write for your copy, if you are a pastor. ACOG SPEAKS OUT The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists urged at its May meeting that legal restrictions against prescribing contraceptives for minors be lifted and that decisions on abortion be left to doctors and their patients. PSYCHOLOGICAL RELIEF Legal abortions have brought psychological relief and happiness to most patients, A New York sociologist told the American Orthopsychiatric Association at its conference in March. Dr. Joy Osofsky reported that interviews with 380 women showed that 76% felt no guilt reactions at all, although 44% of them were Roman TUNE-UP NOW FOR TOP PERFORMANCE PERRY'S ERVICE STATION I « e l wm hßd - HOWARD'S UPHOLSTERY SHOP "Where IN UPHOLSTERING Customer & FURNTURE Satisfaction RECONDITIONING Comes Fint " OVER 20 YRS. Most of the women interviewed requested contraception information and did not view abortion as the preferred method of birth control. “Woman’s right to control her own body and not to bear unwanted children should not be obscured by slanted psychological studies of the past,” stated Dr. Osofsky. VENDING MACHINES APPROVED The Toronto Board of Health has endorsed a proposal to place birth control device vending machines in public buildings throughout the city. Prophylactic (condom) dispensers have been operative in other Candian cities and commissions from sales might be used for research or scholarships, it was proposed. The aim is the reduction of venereal disease. CARE PLAN OFFERED The Population Council in New York City has recently outlined a plan for providing maternity care and birth control services to people of underdeveloped nations at a projected cost of 60 cents per person annually. Authors of the plan, which would capitalize on the fact that women are most receptive to family planning immediately after giving birth, expect the program to prevent millions of unwanted births and at the same time improve maternal and child care otoooß Aqgles On Fishing w dean wohlgemuth rr<l nj rrz GEORGIA GAME AND 1 he Plastic norm fish commission ATLANTA (PRN) - Plastic worms go with hot weather just as surely as does ice cream...but of course, not for the same purposes. As I travel around the state, one on the most frequent questions I’m asked by anglers is “how should a plastic worm be fished? I hear so much about using them, but I never have much (or any) success with them.” I’ll be frank with you on two points: (1) I’m really no expert on plastic worm fishing, though I’ve had good days with them and (2) if I can get a bass on a plug I’d rather. Nonetheless I’ve had expert advice and instruction in worm fishing from some of the state’s best in that field, opportunity to have a voice in determining what our state will be like in the years to come. A large measure of the responsibility for making sure that every Georgia citizen has this opportunity will fall upon these regional advisors. They are serving without compensation out of a desire to help government be more responsive to the people. I am confident that they will do a great job.” Each of the APDC regions is scheduling a series of WANTED!!!!! Tommie’s Market - - Man to learn and work in store. If my suggestions don’t work, remember that I didn’t claim to be an expert, and then go find a good worm fisherman and ask him to show you. That’s the best way to learn anything about fishing anyway. Explaining worm fishing is difficult; there are many ways to hook and fish a worm. I’m convinced, however, that only two methods are worth mentioning, so I’ll stay with them First, you need two items primarily created for worm fishing, and that includes sinkers and hooks (of course, you’ll need a pretty stiff rod conferences this summer to encourage the people of Georgia to “speak their minds” and let the Governor know some specific ways to improve the operations of State government. The newly appointed regional advisors will represent the Governor at these conferences. In addition, they will be speaking to civic groups and other interested organizations encouraging individual involvement in the Governor’s program. The entire Goals program is being administered by the Georgia Planning Association with the assistance of the Area Planning and Development Commissions. A broad cross-section of local communities is expected at the regional conferences. According to the Governor, no suggestion should be considered too minor to be included in the program. All constructive recommendations are welcome and each one will be carefully considered for inclusion in the final Goals plan. The date and time for each of the regional conferences will be announced later by the Executive Directors of the Area Planning and Development Commissions. | SATCHER FORD PLANTATION • 3510 AUGUSTA ROAD | PHONES AUGUSTA 279-4330 AIKEN - 648-4301 S "Before You Buy, Give Us A Try" and a sturdy reel..a medium rod will do, but not as welll Two types of sinkers are best, egg shaped and bullet shaped. Bullet shaped are best. Both egg and bullet shaped sinkers are put on the line so that they’ll slide freely, then the hook is attached. One method I’ll discuss requires a hook with a wire weed guard, the other does not. For those who ! don’t use the weedless hook, it’s best to get the new special hooks with the bend near the eye of the hook to help hold' the worm on properly? Use large hooks, preferabley 4/0 to 6/0. The weedless hook method is relatively simple. Just run the point of the hook all the way through the head of the worm, fasten the weedguard, then cast. The nonweedless hook should be threaded through the center of the worm from the head toward the tail for about an inch or more; than bring the hook out of the worm, turn it over and insert the point back into the worm barely far enough to cover the barb. Smooth the worm along the shank of the hook and, especially if it’s a straight-shanked hook, insert a toothpick through the worm and the hook eye, clipping off the ends next to the worm. This holds it on. Cast the worm to thd bottom of a deep, snagfilled hole, and let it sink. Give it plenty of time, maybe a minute, or even more. But don’t let the line go completely slack or you may miss a strike on the way down. Now, with the worm on the bottom, slowly crawl it back to you. Some folks reel the worm in for a few feet then stop, but most make slow sweeps with the rod tip, then reel in slack. Anytime something stops the worm, point your rod tip in the direction of the line, allowing slack, and wait to see if the line moves off. If it does, wait till the line is tight, than strike hard. If the line doesn’t move, edge it forward only a foot or two, and be very aware to determine whether a strike will come. My experience indicates this is when most strikes will come, because the first stop is a snag and when the worm crawls over it, a fish grabs it. I’d better point out that some top-drawer worm anglers who use a nonweedless hook inbedded in the worm say it’s necessary to strike back the instant the bass hits.
